kids fare on the metro

Hi! I'm travelling to Paris this monday with our two kids (15 and 13 years old) and I'm wondering if I should buy them an adult or kids rate at the metro... Help, anyone? thanks.

Metro tickets are half price for children between 4 and 11 years old. Your children will have to pay the full fare.

Are you familiar with the various kinds of passes available for the metro, RER, and bus? The best one for you depends on how long you'll be in Paris, which day of the week you arrive, and which day of the week you depart.

We (tonight) just paid reduced fare for children ages 7, 11 and 15 without any problem. The reduced fares must be purchaed in carnets of 10.

Did the ticket agent ask for proof of age? The RATP inspectors will. Good luck.

If you're so dishonest that you feel compelled to brazenly defraud a transit system that is already heavily subsidized by taxpayers to keep fares low, maybe you should just stay home.

I feel that circumventing the pricing structure is not a good lesson to teach your kids. You're talking a half-euro savings, for goodness sake.

I don't understand why someone would buy tickets dishonestly, either, to try to cheat a city's transit system our of the little contribution they are making for its use. I don't understand how anyone can buy reduced fare tickets for a 15-yr old, but if the idea is that you buy reduced fare tickets for younger children, and then give them to children who don't quality, this is fraud, dishonest, unethical, and illegal. It would be nice if you folks who do this get caught and slapped with the large fines you deserve.

Gracious,

Tates just asked if a 13 and a 15 yr-old need to pay adult fare.

Why assume that he/she is trying to sneak the kids aboard?

Ditto to Ira. Why did so many jump to the conclusion that the OP was trying to cheat the system?

I was responding to 3mkids. Reduced rate tickets on RATP are for those aged 3 to 11. For anyone under 26, a Ticket Jeunes is valid for a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday.

I think they were responding to this post, not the OP.

Well that's not very fair to the OP, is it?

I asked, "Did the ticket agent ask for proof of age?"

Since the OP isn't in Paris yet, that question would hardly apply to him/her, now would it? I don't think anyone assumed tates was trying to cheat the system.

Cheez, BT. Get that knee-jerk looked at, will ya? It really makes you look stupid.

Thanks for the input. I will buy the full fare for my kids. I wasn't sure if they qualified for the kids fare and we couldn't use the ticket jeunes since we'll be in paris during the weekday. Have a nice day everyone!

There seems to be a confusion. This is especially addressed to Travelnut and AnthonyGA who have incorrectly assumed that we tried to cheat the system. We were in Paris over the weekend. We paid reduced fairs for our children who are properly within the reduced fair age range. We paid whatever the required fare was for our teenager, who obviously looks like a teenager. We ACCURATELY TOLD the ticket issuer the ages of our children, as we always do, and paid the fare that we were directed to pay. After spending all this money to travel, it seems absurd to nickel and dime over items like this, and in any event is not something we would do(and certainly would not teach our kids). As we have been to many places on this trip, some with reduced or no fares(or fees) for kids up to 16 or even 18, sorry for the confusion. In any event, as TimeS correctly posted, the reduced fares in Paris apply to kids between 4 and 11. But this may be different depending on what city you are in. Sometimes the cutoff is 10. So Travelnute and AnthonyGA alas, while there may be cheaters in the world, it is not us.

You said "We (tonight) just paid reduced fare for children ages 7, 11 and 15 without any problem." I assume you mean the Paris Métro, since that's what this thread is about, and you mentioned carnets.

A 15 year-old is not eligible for half-fare travel on RATP networks. If the transport inpectors were to see a teen traveling on a child ticket, they would assess a hefty fine - whether the ticket agent sold you the wrong tickets or not.
