I envy you. I don't get to go to Italy this year. I've never been in Feb., but I don't think the the weather will be great. I have friends in Florence that I could ask for you, but I think April in Italy would be magic!! DO NOT go in August. Not only will it be too hot (with very little or no air-conditioning) but it's the holiday month for Italians. What is not closed will be packed.

Three destinations is too many. My personal preference would be Rome and Florence, but I know many on this board would substitute Venice for Florence. If you want romance with enchantment, go to Venice and be sure to spend an entire evening with the orchestras in Piazza San Marco. If you want romance with art, culture and shopping, go to Florence. Do not miss the David in the Academia (make reservations ahead of time).

If you must go in Feb., I might do Rome and then Sorrento (which makes a must do visit to Pompeii sooooo easy). As I said, I've not been there then, but it is farther south. Perhaps some other posters know about the weather on the Amalfi Coast at that time.

When I'm looking for Italian life (my ideal of it, that is), I go to the Tuscan hill towns--Siena, Volterra---which is easy from Florence, or from the hill towns to Florence, depending on whether you prefer to be in the city or just near it. We've stayed in Castellina in Chianti twice and are totally in love with it. If you want to stay a little closer to Florence, I like Greve a lot, too.

Read all the advice and then make plans according to your own taste, just truly, try not to cram too many desitinations in your time frame. But I know that whatever you decide, you're going to have a fabulous time because, well, it's ITALY.
