jane, thanks for the thoughful post.
i think often people are looking for a certain price range, and don't realize just what that means in european hotels. i am sure the Bonaparte is not the only one showing wear and with thin walls in that price range. i think you'd just need to spring for a slightly more expensive hotel next time to make your stay more comfortable maybe. i know i would.
that said, on my one and only trip to Paris to date, my friend arranged the hotel and we didn't care for it (he especially did not like our room). we moved 2 blocks away the next day, to a hotel he'd stayed at once before, which was exactly the same price and MUCH nicer.
i'm not sure my point exactly now that i've written it -LOL!!

I read the hotel comments extensively and a few more euro(or even a lot more euro) is still not a guarantee that you won't hear people in nearby rooms or that the room won't show signs of wear, even though it may be very clean.
It's my impression that hotels, espec. small independent ones, tend to let conditions go a lot longer than(for example)most moderate-level US chains do. Perhaps it is just not a 'thing' with European travelers if the radiator has stained the wallpaper or there are a few spots on the carpet...
