Lyban,we are also considering our plans for this Jan. Feb and or March,2007. We are retired and want to escape USA NE winters and rent an apt in southern Spain and/or Portugal. We used VRBO previously for Hawaii. Have you found any pertinent websites since your posting? Does anyone have a suggestion for a rental real estate website they have used for the southern part of Spain?

I would recommend avoiding middle of February in COsta del Sol, as it would coincide with British school half-term holidays. It depends on districts, but usually 2nd or 3rd week of February.

Thank you for the winter break advice. We were thinking of a town called Nerja. Do you think this small town would also be affected by holiday seekers? We were hoping to spend a month if possible. Any suggestions?

Click here: Nerja - Mediterranean vacation in Nerja Spain

I have tried repeatedly to include websites but just do not seem to be able to get the hang of it. Perhaps I can email this site to you. My address is [email protected] if you would like to contact me. The site is about Nerja and offers some rental opportunties. As I have said in previous posts we have rented in the Costa del Sol are for years but it has always been through friends or other private contacts.
As far as I know Nerja is not exaclty a small town anymore and it has become quite popular with vacationers. I would not worry too much about February as opposed to January or March. Seems about the same to me with perhaps the weather improving in March.
I have a friend who found some websites offering rentals at reasonable rates. I will contact her to see if she can recall any of them.

A couple years ago we rented a house in the very small village of Nigueles (sp??) in the beginning of March. Frankly, I can't remember how I even found this rental on the internet. The rate was very reasonable and the weather was delightful. We hiked in the orange groves in the immediate area, took a day trip to Granada which was less than an hour away, took hikes in the Las Alpujaras area etc. We only rented there for 5 nights as it was just part of a 2 week trip to Andalucia. We're from Minneapolis, so the weather was a HUGE improvement over that at home.

If the orange groves are anything like the olive groves, there are snakes and scorpions. Wear some boots.
