Jamikins and Bikderscott's Long Weekend in Prague
Bikerscott did not want to go to Prague. We have lived in London for 10 years and it has taken me that long to convince him that Prague would be a good idea. Stories of drunken Brit’s on bachelor parties stumbling through the squares of Eastern Europe completely turned him off. Last year, I caught him in a moment of weakness and booked us in for the first May long weekend!
As we sat having coffee in a Heathrow café before our flight out on Saturday morning, the large group of guys downing beer beside us did not bode well. I commented that I bet they were on our flights and sure enough, they boarded the plane behind us an hour later. It could have been worse, they weren’t sitting near us and we managed to sleep through the two hour flight.
Our hotel had arranged a driver and he was waiting for us as we exited customs. Off we went with the chattiest driver in the world! He didn’t stop talking the entire 45 min journey to our hotel. He was too excited to stop him, telling us all about the tourist attractions and safety of Prague. As lovely as he was, we just wanted silence and it was a relief to finally arrive at our hotel!
I booked us into At the Green Grape hotel and I would highly recommend it. It is on the castle side of the river, with wine bars and beer drinking establishments all around (a bonus for us!). It is also a lot quieter than the Old Town side and we were thankful of this every night! It is also a short walk to the castle (oops we never made it to the castle – shame!).
http://www.uzelenehohroznu.cz/en/home/ The rate included breakfast and a very clean and comfy room. We would definitely stay here again.
For those of you who are familiar with our travels, we basically travel for food and drink. This is part of the reason for our reluctance to travel to Eastern Europe – France and Italy just call to us! To be honest we didn’t have high hopes for Czech cuisine. Scott likes a good sausage, but I don’t like potatoes and sauerkraut. So the first thing I did when planning was book the Taste of Prague foodie walking tour: https://www.tasteofprague.com/prague...FY8Q0wodXUECvQ
This was by far the highlight of our trip and we heartily recommend this to everyone travelling to Prague. It may seem a bit pricey but the amount of food you get is bordering on ridiculous. Our guide, Anna, was amazing – super friendly, very knowledgeable and just a lot of fun. There were 8 of us on the tour and we had the following: a half litre of the freshest pilsner, 5 open faced sandwiches (beetroot and goat’s cheese, celeriac, steak tartare, meatloaf with pickles and mustard, and pork belly), a dark beer with beef broth dumpling soup, and goose confit with sauerkraut and dumplings, 3 wine tastings, and appies, ash potato dish and dessert! We visited 5 different places and would go back to them all! In addition to this you get a food guidebook when you book so you can plan out your food adventures! I cannot say enough good things about this tour!
We had started the morning by sharing a sausage plate and then did the food tour. It may have been a strategic error to have also booked a tasting menu at Sansho. But we persevered and had a lovely later dinner here: http://sansho.cz/ The food is Czech-Asian fusion and very well prepared. Another winner! After dinner we enjoyed a nightcap on the way home and fell into bed stuffed!
Sunday was another gorgeous morning so we headed out after breakfast to take some photos.
Prague is challenging to photograph due to all the people, but we tried our best. After making it across the bridge beside Charles Bridge (too busy to struggle across this morning) we landed back on Old Town Square and spent a few lovely hours drinking beer/wine in the sunshine. This may have been a strategic error. Litre steins of beer and lovely wine went a bit to our heads! We weren’t hungry yet after indulging so much on Saturday so we didn’t really have lunch – strategic error as it would turn out. We left the square a few hours later and wandered until we found a place serving lovely patisserie and stopped for dessert/lunch…and then another beer.
We had reservations at Le Degustation that night and I am ashamed to say we weren’t able to get through the entire 11 course tasting menu! The food was lovely, well presented, and delicious. But the food from Saturday, the beer and wine from today, and the desserts eaten mid-afternoon defeated us. We had the smaller tasting menu (6 dishes) and called it a night! http://www.ladegustation.cz/en/?land_off=1
Monday morning we woke up refreshed and ready for another sunny day in Prague. We thought about going up to the castle but the idea of the crowds put us off. I had made lunch reservations at Dish, a hipster burger restaurant, so we decided to take the long walk in that direction and stop for coffee along the way. It was a beautiful day for a walk and Scott had the most hipster coffee in the world at a small coffee shop. In his own words: it was hand-roasted African, small batch speciality coffee with selected spices, lovingly crafted by coffee artists and presented in an independent coffee shop.
We left the coffee shop and walked through Wenceslas Square, basically the Oxford Street of Prague. Best avoided if you are not interested in shopping. We walked up the hill and found Dish, in a dead business district. I think it was the only thing open! http://www.dish.cz/en/ I had the Chilli Shack and Scott had the Kahuna burger – both excellent. We split some garlic fries with chipotle ketchup. Delish! They hand make each burger patty and cook them fresh, and I liked that the patty was flat, not the big ball of meat we get in the UK. Another winner – score!!
After lunch we wandered back to Old Town and found a quiet patio on a side street to relax and enjoy some more beer and wine. We then hit up a beer hall and a wine bar on the way back to the hotel to get our car service back to the airport. Perfect afternoon in the sun!
Our flight home was uneventful and we fell into bed around 11:30pm. Back at work this morning, but missing Prague already!
I will post the link to the photos tonight!
Happy to answer any questions about Prague!

Thanks Fury!
Yeah we walked Charles Bridge once during the day and then avoided it until dark!
The tourists are really in one area...from Charles Bridge down the main stretch to Old Town Square. We easily avoided them by going a block or so out of the way. Restaurants and bars were blissfully empty, cheaper and filled with locals just a block or so off the main tourist areas!

jamikins, Love your report and the pictures! In Sarasota, FL there is a large farmers market and someone was making and selling those rolled cakes. It was right after breakfast and I had no room to try one. Did you? Are they good?

Great report, takes me back to a week I stayed in Prague. It's been a few years, but I stayed right by At the Green Grape at Vintage Design Hotel Sax. Loved that location, perfect for running in the park in the morning, close to the Strahov Monastery, etc. On the same trip I also stayed in Josefov, in an apartment directly across the street from Le Degustation, where we did manage to do the full 11 courses. You guys are wimps!

Great photos too--make me hungry.
Oh, and I agree: I didn't find Prague that overcrowded with tourists except for the Charles Bridge and the streets directly south of it and Old Town Square. One evening there was a summer rainstorm and I had a dinner reservation across town; I was the only person on the bridge at 8pm.

Sounds like a great trip Jamikins.
We were in Prague 4 years ago and also did a Taste of Prague food tour with Jan and agree it was a highlight of our visit.I was amazed at the delicious cuisine of Prague. Not to forget to mention their beers and wine.
We travelled in October, so think it was little quieter.
We loved our visit and feel that 3 days was not enough.
Thanks for sharing your excellent photos. I always enjoy your trip reports.

LOVE your photos! They are beautiful! You have a great eye for composition. Love the food!
We've been to Prague twice, first in October and then in August. Crowds are primarily on Charles Bridge through Old Town. We loved going in October, not only because of fewer crowds, but really enjoyed the crisp chill air, shuffling through fallen leaves walking up to Vysehrad, and drinking hot mulled wine. Makes we want to return!
