It's snowing in Paris
Hi, I'm in Paris right now and it's been snowing for several hours. I just saw on SkyNews that the Eiffel Tower and
CDG airport are closed, it just showed a caption on the news so don't have any other detais. I was at the ET earlier and some of the buses are running on reduced sche't dules and the Metro was packed. Kind of treacherous walking to avoid slipping, but this is coming from someone from Houston and I don't see or deal with snow often. It is beautiful, very Christmasy, but I'm able to enjoy the beauty without having to deal with it too much, I feel sorry for those who have to drive around the city, buses included.
Last night, again snowy but not too much sticking, I went to La Defense to visit the Christmas Market, very impressive. The crowds were very thin but I can imagine how it is come the weekend. Looking out my window in the apartment it's still snowing but looks a bit lighter. My windows open into a courtyard so I can't see the streets. Getting ready to bundle up and go for a walk.

acadia67, I'm sure you'll be fine on Sunday but I'm no weatherman. I leave Monday a.m. what a pity it would be to have to stay longer.
My apartment is on rue des Tournelles very close to Place des Vosges so I'm off to take a look.

I'm not trying to predict the weather anywhere, it's hard to get accurate forecasts even when home. I don't pay too much attention to the 7 or 10 day forecasts but do use it as a guideline when packing.
I can recommend layering, bringing the usual cold weather clothing, hats, gloves, umbrellas, warm scarves and water-proof footwear is a good idea. I brought a pair of fleece lined short boots with good traction and they have been a lifesaver. I also put several spray coats of water-proofing on them and they've kept my feet warm and dry.
I arrived Monday a.m. and there were very light snow flurries when coming into the city. Tuesday a.m. while taking a walking tour with Paris Walks and we had fairly heavy snow fall during our walk but it didn't last long, quite a bit of icy snow Tuesday evening when at La Defense and today snow starting falling before noon. It has been cold (by Texas standards) but it is winter and I'm in Paris so I don't care what the weather is.

There is no reason a little bit of sow hsould affect a city bus. they are large and heavy enough to have great traction and drive slowly enough so as not to skid. It's not like a small car - and someone who might try to drive at normal speed.
And a bus can get through at lest a foot of snow without any trouble (I got through almost that much unbroken snow in my subcompact sports coupe without any trouble.)
People just need to calm down and keep their wits about them.

TPAY, will post them when I return next week, didn't bring a computer that I can download on.
nytraveler, maybe you should hurry over and give them a
hand. I don't think this was expected and watching CNN a while ago it was stated that this is early for such a heavy snowfall. Not only snow on the roads a problem, even the Eiffel Tower is closed.

Coming from the northeast US where we laughed at a few inches of snow I can say the same amount here causes chaos because there is minimal infrastructure for plowing, sanding and salting. Major snowfalls here are rare. The amount we got today (2-3 inches) qualifies as a big snowfall. Buses were indeed impacted today. I'm looking at the RATP website right now and it says the entire bus network is paralyzed.

As a matter of fact I'm watching the news right now and they are telling people not to pick their kids up at daycare, that they'll stay their tonight. And they're telling people who commute by auto or bus not to leave their work and sleep there tonight. It's the only way they can guarantee you'll have a warm place to sleep tonight. They are warning everyone not to drive. I'm looking at footage of the périphérique and it is a parking lot. Traffic is paralyzed. If temps drop anymore there will be major ice problems tonight.
Now there is footage of work crews on some major road with picks and rakes trying to break-up ice because the salt trucks can't drive in these conditions. It's a pretty pathetic picture I'm seeing on tv.

In parts of Paris where the snow able to accumulate without melting (grassy parks), they say that the snowfall was measured to be 16cm.
Most of it has already melted at the moment (black slush time), but it is supposed to freeze tonight, to make things interesting tomorrow morning.
