It's August, South of France, Wedding will the men need long sleeve dress shirts?
I know the success of our trip does not hinge on "What to Wear" but I thought I remembered reading something about men not wearing short sleeved dress shirts, only long sleeved with suits and ties in Europe in more formal situations.
If this is true I'll need to start searching for shirts with coolmax or something similar to keep my short sleeve preferring husband his usual calm, cool self Thanks for any helpful comments, Deborah

a wedding in france is no different from a wedding anywhere else...what to wear depends on the style of the wedding.
in general, however, short-sleeve shirts with ties are much more popular in france and all of europe than they are in, say, north america. i am not saying that it is appropriate for a wedding and i personally do not like this look but it is more popular in european offices to see short sleeves with a tie.

thanks, walkinaround, that is the opposite impression I picked up from somewhere. To our daughter's wedding in June in Maryland, our friends from France were among the few male guests who wore long sleeved dress shirts.
With most companies doing business casual now my husband has gotten away from suit and tie everyday. Thank heavens, he would say. Deborah

I personally despise the short sleeved dress shirt + tie look: if it's hot enough to wear short sleeves then it's too hot to wear a jacket or tie. Depending on the formality of the reception (outside, still warm, etc.) a very nice casual short sleeved shirt (without a jacket or tie) might well be an option. The formality of the ceremony calls for long sleeves under a jacket, with a tie. 100% cotton is already very cool, and having the shirt professionally laundered, pressed, and packed in a plastic sleeve will keep it (and your dear husband) looking relatively fresh.

I have rarely seen a tie in the South of France except at the casino in Monte Carlo. A shirt and a jacket of some sort (blazer, silk sports jacket etc.) are appropriate. He'll probably take it off. I don't think it matters whether the sleeves are long or short, but short sleeves are not popular with European men.

Thanks, you have confirmed my thoughts. I am also waiting for emails from the groom and his father but they are slower to respond than this forum. If you want a question answered you ask it at Fodor's. Thanks again, Deborah
