Limerick is a pretty big city. If you want a place that's smaller, I would actually suggest Bunratty. It's smaller, got a great castle in case you feel like exploring the next morning, as well as a nice folk park. It's very close to Shannon (which isn't much more than the airport).

It's helpful, but not necessary. I navigated fine without one on my first 3 trips to the Emerald Isle, but plan to have one on my next trip. I had fun with it in Scotland - was great to get lost on purpose, always knowing you could get home if you had to.

I'm afraid I cannot, but there are several threads to search for such things. The place I rented is no longer open, and it was on the County Cork border, about a half hour from Killarney.
Use www.viamichelin.com to get the mileage and then use 35mph as an average, and you will get a decent idea of the time to drive. Leaving on a Monday morning from Galway might be a bit trafficky. I would personally rather be much closer for a Monday flight, like Ennis or Bunratty.

The drive from Galway to Shannon is fairly direct and is a very good road. Normally it takes about 1 1/2 hours to drive it but it depends where in Galway you are coming from. Depending upon where you are in Galway city it could add another 1/2 hour to the trip.
Myself I usually stay the last night in Ennis, only about 20 -30 minutes to the airport. Consider "The Old Ground hotel" a great place in the middle of Ennis.

My flight being at 12 noon I have booked at Bunratty Lodge the night before to avoid last minute rush and panic. Is returning a rental car at Shannon airport fairly straightforward and quick?
Can you suggest a rental company which provide to best service and price?
