I am going to visit Campania next May. This is what I was thinking -
Amalfi – 4 nights
Capri – 3 nights (day trip Anacapri)
Sorrento 8 nights (day tirps)

Originally I was thinking of getting a room with a sea view in only Sorrento, but now am curious if a standard room in Sorrento and a sea view in Amalfi or Capri would be more pleasant.

Also any recommendations on where to stay in each of these places, what I should not miss, and day trip ideas?

Knowing your budget would be a huge help.

We stay in Sorrento at the Excelsior Grand Vittoria - which has beautiful gardens and terraces and rooms looking out over the Bay of Naples. But while they wil do deals in May the hotel is defiitely upscale.

Also I would be bored stiff spending 2 weeks on the Amalfi Coast - but everyone has different interests (I love history - every church, castle and ruin that ther is) and am bored on a beach in about 30 minutes.

I'm curious on where you're going on your daytrips from Sorrento already having done the Amalfi Coast and Capri. Let's see, there's Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum, and Paestum. Oh, and Mt. Vesuvius. But 8 days worth? Will you have a car?

I would love(and plan to do on a next visit) to have a room with a view in Capri.I am a fan of amalfi,and think there is no need for a view there,you will be on the move on the coast almost all day long.

A beautiful day trip from Sorrento could be the royal palace at Caserta,really amazing as far as I know(also in my "to visit" list).
I don't agree with with nytraveller; it all depends on your interests and what you like,please,have in mind that a couple of days can be devoted to "dolce fare niente".

Seems like a long stay in Sorrento after already staying in Amalfi & Capri. Have you thought about staying in Rome for a few days?

We stayed at La Minerva in Capri and it was delightful. I think it gets good reviews on this board. Some rooms have a view and some do not.

Well, I for one envy your staying in only three places over 15 days in the area. I might take a day from Sorrento and give it to Amalfi if you want to visit Paestum. If I was picking the place to have a water view, I'd probably choose Sorrento with a view of Naples, Vesuvius and the bay.

Visit Pompeii on a day when no rain is predicted. There is little to no shelter from the rain, and few of the walking paths are paved.

In Sorrento, we've stayed at the Bellevue Syrene in the recent past, but the dollar/euro exchange puts it out of our range today. Look also at the Tramontano which is practically next door or search Tripadvisor for cheaper options farther from the cliff. The Hotel Delfino (mentioned by qwovadis) is certainly a property that would appeal to some visitors to the area, and there are lovely views from the hotel. But note the Delfino is located 3 miles from the center of Sorrento. If you will have a car, fine. If not, you'll spend money (taxi) and/or time (bus) getting to/from the transportation points in Sorrento.

FYI, Capri is small. The towns of Capri and Anacapri are only about 2 miles apart. If you plan to explore most of the island, you'll probably 'daytrip' to Anacapri a couple of times. ;-)

I agree with the suggestion of Caserta, but it's a longish daytrip from Sorrento. Get an early start.

The lovely Hotel Delfino is located in Massa Lubrenze which as Jean said is 3 Km or so from Sorrento, south of Sorrento. If one has a car it is an excellent hotel but without a car I wouldn't stay there. I rather doubt you will get a room for $60.00. There is a view of Capri off in the distance.

Thanks to all who commented, keep the suggestions coming. It seems with every new post I discover or reinsure a thought. I plan on staying at Grand Hotel Aminta while in Sorrento. This is my time to spoil myself some. The other locations will be more modest of a room. I was thinking Hotel La Tosca in Capri. And am still unsure for Amalfi. As for daytrips from Sorrento - Naples, Pompeii, Vesuvius, Positano, Ravello... That is all I have so far. I am looking for more advise for daytrips not mentioned yet, and trips that I've mention which could be done together in a day. I will be using local transportation. Also, what are some attractions, locations, shops in Capri and Amalfi that I wouldn't want to miss?

Positano and Ravello are on the Amalfi Coast. Best to do them as daytrips from Amalfi. Ditto Paestum. So maybe add time to Amalfi as Jean suggests.

You have a lot of time to cover all the major and minor sights in the area. Or not, if you just want to take it easy!

Probably makes sense to base yourself somewhere here for a night or two, rather than trying to squeeze both into a daytrip - and although tiny Procida has only 400 or so beds, there's a wide range of accommodation choices on Ischia.

Few however can beat this place - up on the tiny "Castello Aragonese" islet, reached by the short bridge that gives Ischia Ponte its name....
