We are going in April fow 2 weeks to visit our daughter who is studying in Siena. Plane/hotels are booked. We are spending the Easter weekend in the Cinque Terre, another weekend in Rome and the rest of the time based near Siena; plans are to visit places in Tuscany we have not seen on previous trips.

October is a fine time to go to Italy. It will be turning colder though, especially in the north. Do not go in July-August as those are peak tourist months. Everything will be crowded, expensive, and HOT! Also, don't go to too many cities. You could easily spend a week or two in each of the main Italian cities and not regret it. If you several cities, especially if they are a significant distance from each other (i.e. Venice & Rome) you will spend too much time traveling, and not enough time enjoying. Also, too many cities in too short a time means a hectic vacation. Relax & enjoy. It's ITALY for God's sake!!

All these future-planners are making me nervous. Husband and I are planning to go in April but have no reservations. First trip to Italy, so will spend three days in Rome, including day trip to Pompeii, couple of days in Venice and a week in La Marche area, with side trip to Florence. Main purpose is to meet up with AF grandson, so we have to wait a bit to make sure he'll be back in Italy from Iraq in April.

June 8-19 with husband and his sister and her husband. Venice, then Rome, then Positano. Hotels booked, plans made, no plane tickets yet. If they go below $800, I'll jump. Last year they went down to $700ish, JFK to FCO for June. I bought those tickets in late February, so I'm waiting to pounce this year.

I'm attending a seminar in Tuscany May 6-13 at Castello di Montefugoni. So my friend and I will stay in Florence a few days as well. She's never been to Italy so I told her we "gotta" spend time in Florence too. Leaving May 1st, might go to France on May 15 but don't know if I can take being gone for a whole month at a time.

Will be doing Rome, Venice and Florence on an organised tour, then a couple of weeks later, 3 nights in Cinque terre and 1 night in Milan before flying out to Berlin. All part of a whirlwind 8 week trip to London and Europe and it's 11 weeks tomorrow that I leave (not that I am counting!) - YAY!!!

PS Thanks to all the fodorites who have helped me with my planning so far!

My plans are far from complete but...
Hopefully April or October 2006.
I'm going to Paris in April, mainly in hope of seeing one goregeous opera I've been waiting for years to attend, plus a very interesting concert that happens to take place in the same week.
I then might go to Italy for 4-5 days, to places like Pavia and Modena, where I could take daytrips, but right now return flights from Italy to Israel are awfully expensive.
Or if I decide to stay in France for the whole trip, I might take a bus trip to Turin from Grenoble.

And maybe October 2006 for Bologna + daytrips. October is a fabulous time to go to Italy, I find. I spent 1 week in Verona last October and would go back in a heartbeat.

But then again, Portugal looks especially inviting for October...

And Myriam, if you happen to read this message, is April 19-24, Easter week, good for Antwerpen? I'm experiencing strong Vlaanderen homesick feelings right now. I'd like to spend some time in Antwerpen to attend museums and go to Brugge and Gent as well.

Going to Tuscany for 2 weeks with 5 women! We have 3 apartments rented outside of Arezzo at : Foresteria Il Giardino di Fontarronco. I have rented a van and I am taking my daughter (her Christmas present!). I have been to Italy 3 times, as has my daughter, but the others have never been. I am so excited! Just waiting on decent air fares hopefully out of Charlotte!
