I can'nt believe no one knows about the toll cards. I heard you can prebuy these cards someone must know. Someone out there must know - has anyone heard of prebuying their toll cards or know how to go about doing this?

No, I don't know anything about it either.

But why are you so set on buying a prepaid toll card?

Less than two weeks ago, I drove with three Sicilians on an autostrada in - where else? - Sicily. The driver did not have a toll card.

You pick up a card where you enter the autostrada, you hand it back where you leave it, the attendant puts it through a scanner, the price you have to pay comes up on a screen, and you pay the attendant in cash. There was no line up, no fuss, no muss.

We drove on plenty of toll roads while in Italy in March and had no problems whatsoever. We usually paid with cash, although sometimes we paid with credit cards. Very easy.

Hello tcmqazz1, in northern Italy my friends all have some kind of sticker on their car..which allows them to go through certain toll gates. It is like our Fast Pass in the SF/Bay Area. I don't know if you have to be a resident of Italy to buy this. I will probably be talking to a friend in Milan in an hour or so and if I do I will ask him and post back here.

According to Autoeurope's website, toll cards can be purchased at the Automoblie Club d'Italia offices.

We travel to Italy at least twice a year, and have bought a car we keep there. Am not familiar with toll cards; our Italian friends who drive the autostrada regularly have an electronic box that is automatically read by a scanner as they slowly drive through the lane especially equipped with the scanner. Their "account" is automatically docked at the end of the month, and a statement sent to them. We've found it unneccessary to have one: a. We prefer to travel smaller roads for the scenery (except when making a long run from, say, our home base in Oderzo outside Venice to Tuscany), and b. The toll booths are well-staffed and fast...just make sure you have your E bills and coins handy.

Just to reiterate: if you need to, you can certainly use a credit card at all highway tolls in Italy. I prefer to use the credit card, as there is no worry about change or denominations.
