There are various ferries from the east coast of Italy to Greece - from Venezia, Ancona, Bari or Brindisi to Igoumenitsa or Patra. From Roma, the nearest is Ancona, a 3 or 4-hour journey by train.
The best ferry companies are:
www.superfast.com
www.minoan.gr
www.anek.gr
From Igoumenitsa, you can get a bus to Athens, but it's better to go to Patra, which has both trains and buses to Athens.

I've done the Italy to Greece ferry 5 time. I'm wondering if you've had more luck figuring things out and am wondering what it is exactly that you need to know.
Of course, as geoffhamer has pointed out, there are not ferries to Athens from Rome. There are ferries from Italy's west coast to Greece's east coast.
