The Amalfi Coast was one of the most breath-taking experiences of our many vacation spots. My husband and I have been fortunate to have travelled all over the world--and with the exception of South Africa have visited all of the places you've listed. We hired a cab driver who told us he was also a guide. We stayed in Sorrento and took the commuter train to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Naples. But for one magical day, our cab driver took us on a tour. He knew how to drive those twisting, dangerous roads, allowing us to gawk and oooh and ahhh to our heart's content. He took us all down the coast into different towns and knew where to park and made it a perfect day. (We hate bus tours--and have found that hiring a guide or sometimes a cab driver is the best way to see the sights and not get frustrated just trying to find a place.) We now have large photos of the Amalfi Coast hanging in our dining room where we relive the experience often. Definitely do the AC. You won't regret it.
