I have to agree with Dayle...Venice is amazing! It makes me sad to think that some people travel all the way to Italy and never visit Venice.

Instead of arranging an airport pickup, we purchased our train tickets for 12 euros each for the 40 minute ride into the train station. This is great if your hotel is close to the central train station and certainly reasonably priced. We spent a total of 3 nights in Rome, walked everywhere with the exception of the Vatican and we used a day pass for this. It's also a good idea to take public transport to the furthest sight and walk back. Our favourite place was Amalfi which would be a reasonable second place for you to visit and it had a totally different atmosphere from Rome; small town Italy and the Hotel Floridiana was incredible and within your budget. We enjoyed Italy so much we're going back again this May visiting Venice, Varenna and Stresa. Enjoy.
