One other thing to not do: do not under any circumstances take anything to eat or drink from a stranger, or even from a new "friend.". A year or two ago there were quite a few cases of young women being drugged and gang-raped on Italian trains. There was also a post on this forum not long ago from a man who saw a man put something into his wife's drink in Venice.

I'm so paranoid about this that I threw out two donuts that someone gave me while I was running in downtown Atlanta Saturday. Probably nothing wrong with them, and I, as an older male, certainly don't fit the demographic profile of a rape victim. But I am unwilling to take a chance.

Just politely decline and walk away. If the person won't take "no" for an answer, then be very rude if necessary.
