Italy itineray planning- please help!

My husband and I have tickets into Milan on 5 April and out of Rome on 12 April. We thought we'd spend one day/night in Milan (opera, Last Supper)and then fly to Amalfi Coast. Rent a car and drive up to Naples, and then one day/night in Rome (We've been to Rome previously) before heading back home. I know it's a short vacation, but it's really our only option for times and arrival/departure cities based on frequent flyer tickets and babysitter availability so that we can leave our 2 year old at home! We've been to Rome, Florence, Venice and thought southern Italy would be nice in April. Basically we have 5nights between our bookends of Milan and Rome- can we do Capri as a daytrip, or should we allocate an overnight there? Ideally we'd like to stay in 2 places among those 5 nights and venture from there. Suggestions please!!!

I don't know if this will affect your plans, but LaScala is closed for restoration/renovations, and Milan opera is being performed elsewhere, in the suburbs I believe.

We had reservations to the Last Supper, but we were there almst an hour early. We went in, and they had openings and let us in on an earlier tour.

Very nice. It's in much better shape than we thought. The restorers did an excellent job.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Naples (close to the train station). You can usually walk up and get tickets to Capri from Naples dock no problem. We did in mid-Sept 2001. Don't wait til the last minute to leave the island; if you want to be sure to leave.

Read up on Capri, be prepared for a lot of climbing. For a breathtaking view, we took the chairlift up the big mountain. For real excitement, take the minibus up the cliff. In one day, we also walked from the funicular to the arch and the Villa Jovis. Unfortunately, the tide was wrong for the grotto boat tour. If you want that, I guess plan ahead.

Hi Mel,

If you fly from Milan to 'Amalfi Coast' it is likely that your flight will arrive at the Naples airport. Rather than driving from Amalfi Coast to Naples - it is likely to be the other way around.

You may want to consider a night on Capri. It has it's own charm as the daytime visitors leave.

If the Pompeii and Herculaneum ruins are interesting to you, consider visiting Capodimente (North of Naples) and the Museum (old town Naples) as many of the artifacts of both are housed there.

Paestum and Caserta are also worth visiting, again if you are interested in history.

Have a great trip.

Hello Mel,

You could do Capri as a day-trip, - but like John I too would recommend a night there.

You can't normally take a car there, - so you might want to consider going there at the beginning of your trip, then rent a car from Sorrento.

Where to stay? Pick any 2 from Capri, Positano, Praiano, Amalfi, Ravello and Sorrento! My choice would be Capri (1/2 nights) and Positano (3/4 nights).

Steve
