Italy Hotel Recommondations
My husband and I are in our late 20's...and celebrating our 30th in Italy this September- ha! We are looking for hotel recommendations.
We love a nice hotel, but don't need all the bells and whistles and certainty wan't to keep it reasonable.
Any suggestions for the towns below?
- Tuscany - (3 nights) - Southern Area - looking to enjoy wine tours, good food, small towns, not the most remote area
- Revello (2 nights)
- Capri (2 nights) - away from torist/port during the day, see the town during the night, after 4 PM
- Rome (2 nights) - near the Spanish Steps area
- Florence (1 night)

In Florence - Tourist House Ghiberti. Well-located on a quiet street, reasonable, and one of the cleanest, most comfortable places we have stayed in Italy. It was recommended by another Fodorite, bobthenavigator, many years ago. We were there in October and are returning again this year. The photos make it look very basic but it is much nicer in person.

Another vote for the Tourist House Ghiberti, but be aware it isn't a hotel in the traditional sense. No real lobby, and the entrance is on the second floor of what feels like an apartment building, so not a 'grand' arrival. But we love the location near the Duomo and a bus stop, and we have stayed there three times.
If you want something a bit more hotel-like, we've also stayed at the Hotel Hermitage near the Uffizi and Ponte Vecchio. Rooms facing the river can be a little noisy until later in the evening, and there are a couple of extremely small rooms. The roof terrace, breakfast room and lobby are lovely.
In Rome, at the other end of the Via Condotti from the Spanish Steps (about halfway between the Steps and Piazza Navona), we've stayed multiple times at the Hotel Fontanella Borghese. The hotel is in the upper floors of a large building. You reach the lobby by walking through the building's central courtyard and going up to the second floor (by stairs or elevator). Staff has always been very helpful with sightseeing advice, restaurant recommendations and reservations, etc. Every bathroom we've had has been very small.
In southern Tuscany, specifically in the Val d'Orcia, we love the La Locanda di Francesca in Montepulciano. The hotel is in a renovated palazzo at the top of the town. Large rooms and bathrooms. Lovely views, very atmospheric setting in the town, terrific owners. But there are only 4 rooms, so it books up fast.

>I recommend staying away from the Spanish Step area>
That is a DAFT recommendation!
This is one of the best areas of Rome.
The Hassler is right at the top of the Spanish Steps, and the Via Condotti is at the bottom.
Do you have something against Prada and Gucci?

>>>kybourbon - I would love to stay in the $200 - $300 range, but don't know if that's reasonable?<<<
Yes, it's reasonable. I usually stay for much less. I rented a small apartment in Pienza for about 50€ a night. You would want a bigger apartment (I was traveling alone and stayed in the smallest one) and it's likely below your amenity requirements.

There are several hotels in Pienza and easily in your price range, but only one or two might meet your standards of nice (?).
A minute or two walk outside the old town.

Across the street from the old town.

This has a pool.

This one has a pool, but it about 5 minutes walk from the old town.

This one also has a pool, but is across the street from the old town.

In Montalcino, check the Capitani (has a pool and views). It's in a quieter end of Montalcino as most tourists convene around the fortress area. The rooms might be a bit rustic, but the views and pool make up for it.

I'm not a fan of the Spanish Steps area in Rome either and tend to stay in other areas.
