Italy car rental- Diesel or regular

I'll be driving through Italy for 17 days in July. To lease a diesel car is slightly higher, but I believe using diesel fuel overall will save us money. Anyone have any info on that and is diesel fuel sold at all/most stations?
Thanks.

HI Susan,

Diesel is sold at all gas stations in Italy. By all means rent that diesel!! You will get much, much better fuel efficiency and it is a little cheaper per liter than gasoline.

Thanks, Diana.

With gas prices what they are, every little bit helps. I'll book the diesel.

Hi S,

It depends on how much driving you will do. You have to do the numbers.

Diesel is about 15% lower than gasoline, and mileage is a little better (we got 40 mpg in a Peugeot 307 diesel).

How much more is the diesel car, and how many miles will you drive?

You will get far better mileage with a diesel. I rented from autoeurope.com in Italy, and it was the same price as a gas powered vehicle.

Diesel is the way to go IMO.

I agree with Ira's analysis. Take the diesel only if it is cheaper in the total cost or the same. On a long term lease, I estimated the break-even point to be at 5000 km.
