lreynold1, that's exactly the coverage I have for my rental in Puglia. PAI is covered with my personal car policy at home and is valid for all kind of vehicles I drive worldwide.

Ireynold, that seems to be different to the contract that we have which has CDW and vehicle theft "WITH EXCESS" the excess being €1900 which is taken from your C/card and hopefully returned if there are no problems. That is the bit that we are insuring.

there then follows a long list of what is not covered - tyres, wheels, mirrors, windows, hubcaps, towing costs, locks, battery, motor, undercarriage, etc. etc.

Personal assistant insurance [PAI] is purchasable locally [there's a surprise] to cover most of the above for €3.72/day [which we might well take] and something called glass/tyre waiver at €9/day which we probably won't.

ours is €219 for 10 days, so if you add on the above the cost is very similar.

I'll send an enquiry to Autoeurope and see what they say. extended cover with no deductible" was not an option that we were offered by argus [the broker that we use] so I'll see if autoeurope offer it to me.

Ireynold - I had a look at the Autoeurope.co.uk and Autoeurope.com sites and there is a notable difference in that on the former in that there are no "no deductible " deals available; they only seem to be offered to US customers.

Unless there are legal reasons to explain the difference, maybe a phone call to autoeurope will help. The person on their toll free number in the US was located in the US and very knowledgeable.

ok, i think that I've cracked it.

further researches on the autoeurope.co.uk website showed that various plans were available though their website, which I can try to summarise:

1. CWD with excess. This is the basic cover - you are covered but only if the damage exceeds the excess [which they take off your credit card] and does not cover the wheels, tyres etc.

2. CWD with refundable excess - as above but the excess will be refunded by them, just like my damage refund insurance.

3. CWD with no excess/deductible . [self explanatory]

4. All inclusive rate which includes the wheels, tyres etc - sometimes called supercover.

I think that you have 4, and we have 1, but with our damage refund insurance and if we take their PAI, we have the equivalent of 3, which will cost us €256 for 10 days which is a little more expensive than your offer, but is otherwise more or less comparable save for your zero deductible.

However to get exactly the same deal as you with autoeurope.co.uk we would need to pay £355 [that pounds not euros] and that would not give us a free additional driver which is part of our deal. [same hire company BTW]

i hope that is clear - I'll be asking questions later!

Not true. I'm in Belgium and I also rented zero excess and super cover (Super Personal Accident Insurance, Coverage for glass, tires and undercarriage.) I pay 385 euro for 17 days (for an economy).

What company is your rental car from? Mine is from Sicily by Car (through AutoEurope).

<<is there some reason why you would not insure the excess as we do? or is that form of insurance not available in the US?>>

SUch insurance is available in the US but it seems a lot of people won't buy it, I usually do when renting a car abroad as it is cheaper than from the car rental company. I don't know if you can buy it separately, but you can buy a travel insurance policy that includes rental car coverage. Allianz sells one, for example, and it covers $40,000 in costs/damages for $72, and is valid in all European countries but Ireland. It is primary coverage, also. AIG has one for that rate, also, but it has a $250 deductible and $35K of coverage.

Hi, Myriam, the rental is with EuropCar, booked through Auto Europe. I am not sure I understand all of the comments posted, but take some solace in thinking that I have obtained complete coverage! I hope I am right about that.

read my post above this one of yours, Myriam and you'll see that I found that it was available through autoeurope.co.uk for a price! Your rate is double ours for only a few extra days, BTW.

we have booked through firefly because they offer a free additional driver which we need. However we have to get a shuttle to their depot, which may yet prove to be a problem.

Ireynold - so far as I can tell you have managed to achieve full coverage without an excess so however rudimentary you believe your understanding to be, you've cracked it!

I don't think so!
1) 17 days is more than 'a few extra days'. It's almost twice what you have (10 days)
2) we pay €385 for those 17 days whereas you would pay £355 (=€415) for only 10 days if you would take the same coverage as we have -> see your option no. 4 (incl. 2nd driver).
