Italy: Advice on Agriturismos / B&B (Rome- Pompei), and Tuscany
I need your help to find agriturismos or B&Bs.
1) by telling me good websites to look after them? I am trying Tripadvisor and ViaMichelin. However, they don't specialize in those type of lodgings, so my search takes longer than I would like.
2) by telling me nice cities to stay (according to our travel plan, see below)
We (my husband, 2 kids 8 and 11 years old, and I) are arriving to Fiumicino airport in Rome on May 7th late at night (around 11 pm).
We are going to rent a car, and drive halfway to Pompei. (It would be great to stay in Pompei, but probably, we are going to be tired, so halfway beetween Rome and Pompei more or less, would be great, definitely before reaching Pomei)
We are looking for a nice B&B or agriturismo, with nice hosts and good breakfast, only to spend the night.
The next morning (May 8th), we will go on with our travel to Pompei Scavi. Stay there for the day, and then drive up to Firenze (Florence), to spend the next day there.
We would love to go to an agriturismo preferably in Tuscany, before reaching Firenze, if possible.
Next day we will go to Rome and sleep in Rome.
I know it sounds strange / crazy to drive so much, but because of the fixed costs for the rental car, it is more economic to rent the car for two consecutive days than to rent the car on separate days (it adds up 50% more), and also to rent the car than travel by train since we are 4.
Can you help us with the agriturismos or B&Bs? Either web sites or lodging, and if you could suggest us cities to stay, would be great.
Thanks for your suggestions

For Italy B&B's, I like to use bed & breakfast in Italy. It links you to the owners. You can search by region, province, town, town centers.

You might also try www.venere.com
With kids, you are moving around too much. You have a lot of road time scheduled and very little sightseeing time.

I agree. Too much driving for that age kids. I would suggest just landing in Rome and staying there and doing day trips. The Train is VERY cheap in Italy if you by multiday passes. You can also have a glass of wine on the train. Rome to Florence is about 2.5 hours by train. Tons of things for you and the kids to see in Rome. I think you would be much happier if you just stay in Rome and enjoy what it and its environs have to offer....

No agriturismo will take you in at 1am in the morning. They are not set up for that.
But a hotel near the airport will, and so will a hotel or B&B in Rome.
You would do better to sleep in Rome the entire time and do day trips to Pompei and Florence.
The best and cheapest plan for your family might be to spend your first night in a hotel near the airport or in Rome, and then after that rent an apartment in Rome.

Thank you for your replies!
After your suggestions, I will change my alternatives to:
1) 1 trip to Florence / Tuscany by rental car
2) some days later 1 trip to Pompei by train
Can you recommend me a nice agroturismo in Tuscany? We want to live the Italian culture....
About the previous alternatives, you are right, is a lot of time in the car for the kids, however, they will be asleep during driving times (and they can really sleep in the car, we have donde long hours before).
What worries me (I didn't notice) is that the lodgings are not going to open the doors for us at 1 am.
I am researching prices for train. I found 4 roundtrip tickets for Napoli at 132 Euros, but it adds up to 224 with issue and delivery cost, I will try to find the way to do it by electronic ticket (right now is not an option for us, maybe because of the Peruvian Address).
I will try to find the post on how to reach Pompei by train.
Thank you very much!

Florence is the last town you want to drive to. Parking is rare and expensive. In the historic center, driving is limited to locals. If you search this forum for ZTL, you will find many reports of people getting fined (months later) for inadvertently driving in the center. The alternative is to park on the outskirts and take a bus or taxi into the center. Not sure this will work so well with kids.
Unless you are huge fans of Renaissance art and architecture, save Florence for another trip.

Try to use www.trenitalia.com for train reservations: online ticketless option and no delivery costs. If it doesn't work, buy the tickets in Rome; trains rarely sell out.
With the Familia fare, the children get 50% off, the adults get 20% off. With the fast (but not superfast) IC trains, round-trip fare Rome-Naples for the four of you will cost 114.40 Euro.

You don't have to buy family fares in advance. Here are the rules for the fares (not for tickets under 10€).
