Italy
Two couples are planning a trip to Italy mid October-4 nights Venice, 4 nights Rome, 3 nights Sorrento. Is that the order we should do them? We would like to take a fast train from Venice to Naples. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks!

My friends are now relaxing in Italy. They first started their trip with Rome will be there for 3 days. Their next trip to Venice there they will walk for 2 days. The last city they will see is Milan. They have a girlfriend living there. They will fly home from Milan.

I think you are doing this backwards. The current procedure is set the sequence, and force visits and flights to match the chosen sequence. You can end up spending time in a city on closed days, poor departure/arrival/layover logistics, accommodation price/availability issues.
Preview:
Which flights are avaialbe and acceptable to you? Into Venice, out of Rome; into Naples, out of Venice; into Rome outof Venice, etc. If you are coming from a city with direct connection to Venice, Venice return is probably a mid day flight. If you have to make a layover in Europe before returning home, Venice departure can be insanely early, and it is a time consuming place to get to the airport. Itineraries requiring hopeless connections are best avoided. You do not have to land in Naples to visit Sorrento. If your Rome arrival is early in the morning, you can arrive in Sorrento even before they let you check-into the Sorrento hotel.
What are the venues your are heading to? Are they open on the day you plan to visit?
Are there accommodation availabilities acceptable to you on the days you plan to visit each city? If you book refundable accommodations, you can safely lock the accommodations before you book flights. If you book flights first, you are boxing yourself into a sepecific dates and a sequence.
How are you moving from one place to another?
Only after you have all the key info, you can assemble pieces knowing that they all fit together before making any non-refundable non-changeable arrangements.

Thanks for your reply. We will fly into Rome and be in Rome for 4 nights, train to Sorrento for 3 nights and train to Venice for 4 nights and fly home from there. I think the sequence is good for sightseeing and relaxing. Things are falling into place!

Depending on when you land in Rome, you might consider heading to Sorrento immediately, then Rome, then Venice. The arrival day is usually difficult to use for much sightseeing, and the Sorrento area would be a little easier for recovering from any jet lag. Heading there first would eliminate the one very long day getting to Venice from Sorrento.
FCO to Naples to Sorrento: 3 1/2 hours
Sorrento to Rome: 2 1/2 hours
Rome to Venice: 3 3/4 hours (as opposed to Sorrento to Venice: 6+ hours)
