ISO hotel for Rome layover
Hi! We have an overnight layover in Rome at the end of our trip. We *might* be motivated to go into the city for a drink and a late night walk around - but since it is the end of our trip and we have both been to Rome before, we more likely than not will be exhausted and not up for the trip into the city - really would be looking for a place to sleep for a few hours between flights. We arrive in Rome around 10pm and are departing around 9am. I was hoping to find a hotel that had a shuttle service or was on an express bus line - I understand a cab would cost us 50 Euro each way! Just looking on expedia at a few places - Hilton Garden, Comfort Inn, etc. - that say they offer shuttle service, but a few of the reviews blast those hotels for poor service with respect to the shuttles (i.e. didn't run at night or early in morning, had a hidden cost. . .). Looking for ideas on the best way to approach our 12 hours in Rome! Thanks.

We stayed at the Best Western Riviera. It's about 5 km from the airport. For us, it was the perfect spot if all you need is a place for a layover.
It's clean and modern, and has a decent free breakfast. I think the shuttle is about 5 euros/pp. It has timed stops at the BW and other nearby hotels. The service was good, on time and efficient. You just let the desk clerk know what time you want to get the shuttle, and he/she will give you the time of the stop and make a reservation for you. (I think we paid the hotel directly for the shuttle, even though it seemed to be run by a vendor.)
One downside is that the hotel is a bit remote. The only restaurant we could find within walking distance was a small, inexpensive place with pizza and a limited menu. It sufficed, but not if you're looking for anything special.

I would prefer the Airport Hilton, myself, although I've never stayed there. Normally I would prefer to stay in central Rome, where there are far more choices for dinner, but since you're arriving at 10 PM, your decision to stay at or near the airport seems reasonable.
Other than the Airport Hilton, all the other airport hotels are out in the remote parking and rental car wilderness. I once had a forced layover in Rome and stayed where my airline was willing to pay, but if it had been my own choice, I would have been willing to pay more for the Airport Hilton, which does have a shuttle into Rome.

We stayed at the Airport Hilton and it worked for us with a very early flight. When you walk inside you are in a modern US Business hotel and don't feel like you're in Italy anymore. However, it may be perfect for your situation.

We have stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Rome Airport and rather liked it, and had no trouble with the shuttle. Of course, this is purely my experience and I wouldn't doubt someone who said they did have trouble.
For us, the price was good, we had a very good hamburger from room service, and comfortable night's sleep.
If it helps, I always ask airport hotels if the shuttles are available at the time I want to use them when I actually reserve; I wouldn't trust just a website.
