It depends on what you consider expensive and when you go. It also depends where you stay, hotel, appartment block or ABnB. Certainly most restaurants are in the low to medium for European prices. Accom booked now would be very reasonable out of the posh hotel area.

Affordable is a vague term. We found it comparable to other mid-sized European cities in countries such as Italy (but we were only there a few days as part of a longer visit to Croatia).
If cost is a concern, just check accommodation and entry prices online. If you find food expensive, you can always picnic or choose less expensive places to eat.

I would say that Split is quite affordable. But you know, stick to the same rules as you should where ever you go: avoid eating in the city center. If you just move a little bit from the center, it will be cheaper for sure. But do not worry, it's not like Italy. In Split you can eat in the city center for a reasonable price whereas in Italy that can get pretty difficult. At least in my opinion. So you should not worry. It is definitely way cheaper than Dubrovnik which is supposed to be the most expensive city in Croatia. As far as accommodation, yeah, check the prices online and I am sure you will find what you are looking for.
