Go to whichbudget.com - great site for budget flights all over Europe. You can fly from Gatwick to Croatia. I didn't see any flights from Croatia to Venice. I would suggest just fly back to London and then fly from Gatwick to Venice on Easy Jet. These flights are so cheap plus you would get some more time in London. I've come back a couple of times and I love having more time in London. Most flights are short. It was 2 hr to Rome and 1 hour to Holland.

In summer SkyEurope http://www. skyeurope.com fly from London to Bratislava and from there to Dubrovnik. All year Ryanair, http://www.ryanair.ie, ++44 870 156 9569, fly from Stansted to Ancona and Pescara. The reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Timetable, where you will find that trains take hours from Pescara to Ancona. From Ancona boats of Adriatica, S E M Maritime, and Jadrolinja, http://www.jadrolinija.hr/, then English, sail in 8, 9, or 10 hours to Split. Night boats of Adriatica leave Ancona at 2200 on Wednesdays and Saturdays and of Jadrolinja at 2100 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Trains run to Bari from Ancona in 5 hours and Pescara in 3 ½ hours. From Bari boats of Jadrolinja sail from Bari at 2200 on Wednesdays to Dubrovnik at 0600.
After a boat back, trains run from Bari and Ancona to Venice. The Tergeste night express with 6 berth couchettes and 3 berth second class sleepers leaves Bari at 2139 and reaches Venice at 0709, fares with berths are 80 euros in a sleeper and 50 in a couchette. Day trains take 9 hours, and day trains from Ancona to Venice take 4 hours.
Please ask me if you need notes on how to book Italian trains: please do not use RailEurope in Piccadilly, with their 30 percent markup.

There is a daily ferry from Venice to Northern Croatia, you can find it on the net under Venezia Lines Spa. From Northern Croatia, you can take an overnight ferry on Jadrolinja to Split or Dubrovnik, their schedules are also available on the net. Cheaper than the plane, and you sleep on the boat so you don't lose any sightseeing time.
