I was told that Omonoia is not the best place to stay in Athens, is this true? I have booked a hotel there for 3 nights next month and I am a bit worried. Do you have any suggestions for a hotel in another area if Omonoia is dangerous?

Seedy, yes. Dangerous, no. There are many hotels in the Syntagma Sq and Monastiraki area that would be more suitable, and nearer to Plaka and the ancient sites.

For 3 nights, I also suggest you check out the Kolonaki district. It's just a wonderful place to be at night, full of sophistication, good food and life. But if you are a family with kids, you might want to be right in the heart of the tourist section.

Pleasant accommodations. Very nice people. Good view of the Parthenon from the roof-top breakfast room. You can walk to everywhere of interest.

Not dangerous, but definitely not very salubrious. You don't say which hotel (a few are located slightly better than most), nor do you give a budget in €s per night. As Heimdall says there are many choices in better areas & better placed for sightseeing.

As far as I know it is not the best place to be in Athens even though it is considered to be the heart of the greek capital! If I were you, I would try to find a place in the old city close to the Acropolis. I have been in Plaka which is an aold part of the city with old yet well-preserved houses, narrow streets, flowered yards and small cafes. I believe that you will enjoy a better accommodation there. This is a list with hotels in Plaka http://www.athens-greece.us/plaka-hotels/ but you can alos stay at Monastiraki or Syntagma which are close to Plaka and close to the metro stations. When I was in Athens, I had booked a hotel near Syntagma and it was a really convenient location but Plaka is really pretty!

I don't think you need to be worried, but I agree that Plaka and Syntagma Square are better areas, particularly if you like being in the heart of things. I liked both of those areas.

I stayed there a few years ago. It isn't pretty, it is a bit run-down, there actual Square has some slightly dodgy looking people hanging round, but it was cheap and the hotel itself was ok. It's just not a tourist area. I didn't feel unsafe at all, but then I'm used to the seedier bits of London, so appearances don't really bother me. It wouldn't be my first choice if I went back, but if it was a matter of not being able to afford a better location, I'd book there again.

Omonoia is Seedy i agree..
don't worry no one is going to discomfort you but...don't have much money in your wallet, never knows.., if you have child just have a look of them
the people there are from other countries ,most of them are narcotic don't talk a lot with them ..
the best is not to leave there but i don't think so that you have big droubles ..
Kolonaki is beautiful but expensive ...
