Is London's St James's Park safe at night?

We like to stay at a hotel near St.James's Park and enjoy walking a lot during our visit. During the day there are usually lots of people enjoying this lovely area, with the trees, flowers, squirrels, and lake with ducks. But at night, even around 9 pm in the summer, it appears deserted. We never cut through, even though our tired feet would like to. We have walked down the Mall, as it is lit but it's still spooky, as is the path from Piccadilly.

I wouldn't sit around alone at 3 am - but would be perfectly willing to - and we have a couple of times - walked through in the evening (later than 9pm). But, then we do the same with Central Park.

I can't imagine anyone avoiding the path across the park even when it's dark. But in broad daylight (which is what there is at 9 pm in the summer), such an attitude is downright perverse.

And what on earth is "spooky" about the path from Piccadilly?

Considering who the neighbours are, I think you may take it that there's a rather more vigilant eye being kept on St James's and Green Parks than on some other parts of London. Though I suspect there may be rather fewer Guardsmen hanging around than there used to be - but that's another matter.

If you're really worried, take a really loud whistle.

If you really want to be kept an eye on, wear a burkha and carry a backpack.

Is that some sort of cold-war era soviet spy code?

We always stay in that area too and I love St. James. We've been there at dusk but never too late at night. But since it is soooo close to Buckingham Palace, I would imagine that it can't be that unsafe.
