Is it possible to lose luggage on a direct flight?

We flew BA direct to Heathrow this summer. On the return flight at least half the passengers were missing at least one checked bag. The BA rep said they just didn't load all the bags, since the commercial cargo was priority!!
We got back on a Monday evening, our bags Thursday evening. Since we were returning home, this was annoying but did not throw a wrench in our trip. However, I saw two backpackers in tears. They were in Canada only for a week on a pre-booked canoe trip, and neither had any bags arrive.
At that point, I decided only carry-ons from now on. Guess that won't work either.......
