I don't know what tax rates are in Ireland, but if they are about 50 pct or less, that's pretty good considering the benefits as I pay about that much in the US (more if you count local taxes) counting federal and state income tax, plus soc. security and Medicare taxes and we don't get any benefits for those taxes in terms of education or health care (until retirement). State taxes subsidize some state universities, but they are still very expensive in many places--more than they should be. Someone in a low income category wouldn't pay about 50 pct in taxes, though, that is true, but tax rates aren't that low in the US, in my opinion, even at moderate incomes.

Another wonderful thing about Ireland is that the elderly are very well taken care of. Not only is the home health care much better but independant reirees recive free bus travel cards which enables them to travel anywhere in Ireland they like. I wish they would adopt ideas like that in the US = )
