Is driving the best option from Madrid Barajas straight to Segovia?

I'm trying desperately (and nonsensically) to fit in a trip to Segovia on my planned Barcelona-San Sebastian-Paris vacation. If I flew from BCN to MAD, what's the best way to get to Segovia with luggage in tow? Do I need to rent a car from the airport, or is there a bus from MAD? I've looked into the train both from Barcelona and from the Madrid airport, but it looks like I'd have to do some local tranfers in order to get on the fast train to Segovia...I don't think we can manage that with our luggage.

Any advice? This forum has been so helpful. Yes, I know that this itinerary makes no sense.

Renting a car is not a bad idea at all. You could be in Segovia before even changing trains elsewhere.

Yes, if the need is that great to see Segovia, a car would be best, oherwise all transportation leads into Madrid proper.

And thank you for being honest about your obsession. It is refreshing.

Thank you for the advice. Would driving to Segovia from the Madrid Atocha train station be more of a hassle than driving from the airport? I realized I could rent a car at Atocha as well, which might be less expensive.

I'm happy to be called refreshing, but Segovia actually isn't my obsession. My husband is SO excited about the idea of seeing the Segovia aquaduct and eat the cochinillo asado. Since I've been dictating everything else about the trip, I figured I should do whatever I can to make that happen for him.

Leave from the airport. you are right there at the crossroads of the the highways.

Just follow the A6 (VI) signs towards La Coruña. It will get you there.

The drive is easy, the roads good, and the cochinillo, (or cordero lechal) delicious, and the storks delightful!
