While I wouldn't use a shared bathroom on my honeymoon (but I wouodn't travel abroad on one either), I have used them with no ill effects.

If you are in a small hotel or B&B, there may not be a room with an 'en suite' bath. On recent trips, I experienced the following:

Slane, Ireland - B&B - We had the only room w/o bath - about $3.00 less per person. It was the only room w/o bath, so the bath down the hall was only used by us.

Nottingham, England - small hotel. Had two rooms w/o bath. Were 2 other rooms on the floor.

Salisbury, England - small hotel. Had 2 rooms w/o bath. Was one other room on the floor. Were two 'bathrooms' - one was toilet only, one was bath/shower and toilet.

Cashel, Ireland - B&B - about 3 rooms on the floor.

Yellowstone Nat Park - had 2 cabins at the Old Faithful Lodge. Was nice bathroom (toilet) building. Clean, no problem. Showers available in the lodge building.

15 yrs ago, at least 2 places in Germany - Rothenburg and Munich

Read an old copy of 'Europe on $5 a Day'

Check out the facilities before you agree to the room. If you don't like it, then go elsewhere. (harder to do if you have reserved ahead)

This is a tough one. I guess it depends on the place you stay. But I would guestimate more often than not, the shared ones are clean. I stayed in St. John in a shared place and it was alright, not super great, and wore my shower shoes. But the B & B I stayed at in St. Thomas, well there were no other guests, so the shared bath seemed like our own. On a honeymoon, I would opt to not share. Some places don't charge that much more for a bath. Depends on the research you do and where you stay. Also depends on what you want to spend your money on. Sightseeing, trains to other locales, buying knick knacks and gifts, food (I love eating at good restaurants, why not splurge, you're on your honeymoon, and hoepfully it will be the only honeymoon you take, so make it memorable). Good luck. Whatever you decide I'm sure you will have a great time

Are you having a budget honeymoon? I'd think not; gee, spend a bit more $$ to get your own ensuite bathroom!!
