is 1 hour and 20 minutes enough time to change planes in amsterdam

Hi,

We have been rerouted by AF. Instead of a direct flight we now are flying into Amsterdam on KLM/NW. We arrive at 8:10 a.m. and our plane to Paris leaves on AF at 9:30. We will only have carry-on luggage. I do not know the Amsterdam airport at all. Will we make the flight without running like hell?

Thanks, Yipper

Hello yipper you should be fine if your plane does not arrive late, and hopefully it won't.

Here is the website for the airport, up in the upper right hand corner you can click for the English version.

http://www.schiphol.nl/

That will get you familar with the layout of the airport which is more user friendly then a lot of airports.

Best wishes..and by the way..I survived running like hell through that airport, lol, so if you have to know you will live through the experience. Best wishes!

Hi Loveitaly,

Thank you for the encouragement. I am pretty sure that we have to go through security again. I assume with only carry on this will make things easier. I will check to see if AF has a later flight in case we miss the connection. Hopefully I will not worry about this until we land in Amsterdam.

KLM and Air France are partners now so the connection will be fast and quick.

Maybe you could the stewardess before landing about your worry and she'll give you exactly where your next flight will be located. Normally they can arrange this information.

The airport is a good airport for changing flights, so you should have plenty of time.

You will go through immigration and security at Schiphol. However provided the flight is on time (and US flights are frequently early)you will have time to get through it all with no problem. It really isn't that huge an airport.

As mentioned most flights from the U.S. arrive early. You should only have to go thru security at your departure gate. It takes around 30 minutes to walk from one side of the airport to the other side. It is a very nice airport. You should have enough time.

One more vote of encouragement Yipper. Assuming your flight is early or on time, you should have no problem at all.
I too has similar concerns last October whilst connecting though Amsterdam Schiphol with a 2 hour connection and received lots of encouragement from hetismij and others and they were absolutely correct - 2 hours was plenty of time for me. Schiphol is one of the easiest and most user friendly airports to use. Just follow the overhead signage.

Just remember that security is done at the boarding gate where you will encounter line-ups, so get to your gate as soon as you can. The good news is that the lineups move quite quickly.

You should be fine as long as your flight is on time. If possible, try to get seats near the front of the plane. That way you can be one of the first to get off if you are pushed for time.

We arrived at Schipol from Detroit en route to Munich in September and we had to go through security in the middle of the airport and not at our gate. We had a 2 hour lay-over and had at least an hour to spare before our next flight. When we arrived at Schipol from Munich on our way home we had to go through security at the gate. Our flight into Amsterdam was about 20 minutes late so we did sprint to the gate and then had no time to get any lunch because of the gate security. Once we cleared security at the gate we had to sit for about 30 minutes in what seemed like a very small room with a plane worth (A330) of people. If that is the case I would recommend waiting until the very latest to go through security at the gate. I know that is what I will do in that situation next time.

I concur - you should have enough time assuming your flight is on time; the AMS airport is easy to navigate as well.
