I'm glad you're going -- just take it easy and have a very leisurely beautiful time. And come back and give us a Trip Report.

Ira, Macular Degeneration does not improve. There really isn't any "cure." The best possible scenario is to slow down the degenerative process. Waiting a few days for Mom's eyes to get better will just waste those days. Vertigo is different, and it could even clear up as quickly as it came on. I would first check with her doctor(s) to get their opinion about traveling to Ireland. But, csam, unless they told me it was dangerous to take her, I would go. Keep your mom on a tour bus to see the sights instead of walking, or see as much as you can from a rental car. Choose carefully those special places when she will have to get out and walk--and make it count. Don't wait until "tomorrow," until she "improves," until you both are rested from your last trip. Think about it: if her doctor tells you not to go, you've waited too long already.

You also didn't say where you'd been in Costa Rica that you felt was VERY difficult. Other than the flight and driving, if you mean the San Jose to Arenal areas then I expect Ireland to be much more difficult to drive. I was there last October and driving and walking around Arenal was totally different than in Monteverde.
I've driven in Western England and Wales and the roads are much narrower and you're on "the wrong side of the road" as many Americans say.
I'm going to Ireland myself in 6 weeks so I'll be experiencing it myself then.

I think you should cancel. Make sure your mom gets to a doctor asap. My aunt was on a trip in Egypt when she felt dizzy and assumed it was Vertigo--came home a few days early. Turned out to be more than Vertigo (I won't say what because I don't want to scare you for no reason).

Susanteach,
My mom saw a doctor yesterday - because she now has a case of strep! Yikes!!! The doc put her on high dose of meds, and she's already feeling better. Also, her doctor told her to continue traveling. Actually, packing has been fairly easy because most of our stuff from our last trip is ready to go.
Thanks much!
Carrie

"She said, "We have all eternity to rest, so let's go for it!"

How brilliant! I think we should all adapt that as our mantra for travel.

"adapt"? adopt. Well, we could adapt it too.

Carrie,
Ireland can be taken slowly, the pubs are terrific and you'll have a nice time together seeing the scenery.
