Assuming that you intend to drive from one city to another, then the one that helped me the most would be:

www.viamichelin.com

I think that comparing viamichelin.com against mappy.com seems worthwhile.

Best wishes,

WWW.Mappy.com is much easier to navigate than Michelin IMO.

I prefer viamichelin.com, but it's really a matter of what suits you best. Try several websites.

Many of these sites draw from the same database so it becomes mainly a matter of which you find easiest to use. Some sites offer different options for routes - avoiding tolls, scenic routes and the like. But recently I had to pick up a rental car in a small town in Italy and mapped the address using viamichelin. It gave me two options, both of which looked reasonable, so I tried two other sites and ended up with four different maps for that one address! The discrepancy arose from the way the front end (the application - viamichelin, mappy, etc.) interpreted the address's street name, which (though it came straight from the rental agency) was not the same street name that was stored in the database that the map sites used. So poke around, try a couple of different sites. These should get you started:

http://www.mappy.com/
http://www.mapquest.com/
http://www.maporama.com/
http://www.multimap.com/

Add Google which also gives step-by-step driving directions.
