This will give my trips to London an added insight - a remarkable overview of London in the war:

It is fascinating isn't it? You can also download an Android App.
It has my childhood home on the map, but accredited to the wrong town
. A few bombs fell close by. Our house still had an Anderson shelter at the bottom of the garden. I can't imagine having to spend night after night in one.
My secondary school had a V2 land in it's grounds. It destroyed all the windows, and a good chunk of the roof, but the basic building was undamaged. When it was re-roofed they put tiles of a different colour in in the form of V2 to remind everyone.

first time I went to London I still saw empty lots near St Paul's that were from bomb damage - yes let's not forget the horror Londoners and folks in other British towns like Coventry went thru night after night.
Never again we hope - here or anywhere else.

Well Patrick yes and sad - sad for human beings that since time memorial there has always been some kind of war going on somewhere - never a second of complete peace in thousands of years I understand.
some day humans will truly evolve to advanced creatures we hope - sharing the wealth of the world would help a lot.

Except that London wasn't bombed by a bunch of desperately poor people we'd been exploiting. Nor is Syria being blown up by financial exploiters, or by a people financially oppressed.
Wars happen for all kinds of reasons - but most often for power.
Money is certainly the root of some evil. But it's simple minded to believe it's the root of all of it. The inventor of the silly cliche wasn't beheaded a few years after he'd trotted it out because Nero wanted his money: Nero believed Paul's teachings threatened (depending how you look at it) the Empire's stability or ultimately Nero's life.

do you not think Flanner that the Assad family and their mates have grown rich by using heir power and position, and that part of their motive for clinging on [literally, probably] for grim death is that they stand to lose all that?
they are doing as much of the blowing up as the rebels.
