Actually there are some trains that are non-stop from the Frankfurt airport to Munich. I see one at 6:54 (probably too early) and one at 8:54 (perhaps too late), that take a total of 3 and a half hours, probably still better than trying to make connections flying, in my opinion.
Also there are numerous trains from the Frankfort airport to Munich that make a single connection -- in Mannheim or Wurzburg.

If your destination is Munich then I recommend you fly to Munich. Unless there is a non-stop from your hometown airport to Munich you'll need to make a connection somewhere.
That connection can either be in the US through SF, Newark, JFK, Chicago, etc. or in Europe.
It will be far easier to connect on the US side rather than figuring out how to get around Europe after an overnight flight.
UA and Lufthansa fly to Munich from several US airports.

Reading previous posts, OP states that they are starting out from London.
Obviously I've missed somthing. London to Paris is not a long flight and would hardly produce jet lag. There are many options for travel to Munich without going through Paris.

I didn't see London mentioned anywhere in the post but I must have missed something.
CHC - are you saying you can't get a direct flight from London to Munich for less than 2400 euro for 5 people? I just did a quick search on www.sidestep.com and used 12/20 as the departure date and 12/25 as the return - just to get an idea. I found a direct flight from LHR to MUC for $210 (about 165 euros). There are lots of 1 stopover in Zurich flights for $200. If you aren't starting in London, this obviously won't work for you but you might want to check sidestep for other possibilities.

Whoa. Now something is seriously wrong. Surely we aren't talking about someone needing to get from London to Munich so they're booking flights to Paris. This simply doesn't make any sense at all.
Help us out here, chchtrain -- where are you starting?

Chchtrain, let me suggest this. Go to one of the flight search engines such as Orbitz or Travelocity and put in your home airport as departure and MUC as arrival. Then when you get the possibilities, you can come back to this forum with specific questions, such as "Is it better to connect through Philadelphia or O'Hare if I have three children with me?"
The more specific you can be with your options, the better advice you can get.

not sure I understand the intent or direction (literally) of your trip, chchtrain, but if you refer to a post on the europe board about a recent (this past weekend) article in the wall street journal about very cheap inter-european air fares and how to find them, you will most certainly save yourself a good bit of money.
