Insurance when renting a car in Italy

Hi, I am renting a car for eight days in early Oct. in Italy.I am concerned about insurance for the passageners in my car.Ilooked at the contract for Autoeurope and it states the driver and passageners are not covered .I must be missing something .I called my insurance company and AAA. they both said when I get there to discuss it with the Agency in Italy.I have confidence that people here can help. Thanks so much.

Hi lil,

All rental agencies are required to carry third party insurance in case you hurt someone or damage their property.

In Italy, collision insurance covering the car you rent is required when you hire the car.

You want accident and medical insurance to cover you and your passengers. This is a different kind of insurance.

I'm not sure that it will be available from the rental agency.

If your health care carrier doesn't provide this insurance in Italy, check with www.insuremytrip.com

A lot of Europeans count on their insurance at home to pick up any damages where ever they are..check out that option as well.

If you want it they have the option and you add it (just like in the States) - they sometimes call it PAI and its not really really insurance but a way of cutting your costs.

Thanks I did try to research with my insurance carrier,[allstate], but agent I spoke with was not sure.I will call my local agent Monday.Ira I would think this type of coverage would be included. If you get into an accident with an uninsured person or hit a tree and get seriously hurt without some type of rider this could wipe the average guy out.

there are numerous posts here about insurance.
the occupants insurance is always an optional insurance, even in the states.

also, see if you know what coverage you are getting for YOUR car.. is it zero deductible.. or 1,500 euros compulsory, etc. etc. tires/windsheilds/windows covered.. or not?

amazing the differences in companies, and coverages. just know before you go.

Hi lil,

I agree.

You will most likely find, however, that your auto insurance doesn't cover you outside the US (and maybe Canada).

It is your medical insurance that should cover you for injuries sustained in a foreign country.

Check with them.

These people offer $100k worth of evacuation insurance (not medical coverage- but just to get you home) for diving or non-diving accidents or injuries from anywhere 50 miles from your home or farther. The family membership is $44.
