insurance for drivers in Italy

My family are staying at a villa in the Tuscany area. The owner has offered to "rent" two vehicles for a fee for the week. Our concern is the insurance given our American policies will not be applicable. Is there a company that will provide excess insurance should the villa's owner coverage not be in force? Or we are considering just renting cars from a commercial carrier to avoid the question altogether. Much thanks!

Have you talked to your insurance agent?

Hi msc,

>The owner has offered to "rent" two vehicles for a fee for the week.<

Your US auto insurance won't cover you outside North America without a special rider.

If your villa owner isn't in the car rental business, it is unlikely that his insurance will cover you for 3rd party liability, which is more important than vehicle damage.

This might be a good deal for Italians, but not Americans.

PS,

If the car breaks down, who will you call to get it replaced?

If the owner wants to rent you the car ask him to provide the insurance as a rider on his policy. And make sure how the policy works - that is covers for liability - not just collision. (Your US insurer won;t touch this with a barge pole.)

Otherwise go with a commercial rental car.

To be honest, for what you can rent a small car for, with the insurance, I'd just rent one. I can see lots of hassles on a "provided" car. Then you don't have to be concerned as much.
