I was in Amsterdam during the Mad Cow Disease scare, so I ate vegetarian the whole time and was surprised at how inexpensive it was. So, if you guys want to take a break from hotsput and sausages, go veg for a meal! I ate at a fruitstand on Damrak (the first one when you are walking away from Centraal Station) every day for lunch and the produce was absolutely excellent.

As for restaurants, my Amsterdam journal is not in its usual place, so I can't give names, but I usually let smell guide me as I had no book.

Our trip to Amsterdam is in October, and I'm filing away all this great information.

Thanks, everybody!

A restaurant on my list from last year, a recommendation from this forum, is Restaurant Haesje Claes for traditional Dutch food. Haven't seen it suggested, so maybe the Haesje Claes fans are on vacation. Can't vouch for it but will try it next month since I'll be staying in that area this year. On Spuistraat, which is a bit west of Damrak. It's supposed to be near The Five Flies (forget the Dutch name), which is pretty expensive but reputedly good. (OK for people on expense accounts - my husband is setting up a dinner for one of his company's large customers there, as he does every year.) However, some Dutch friends laugh about their dinner at The Five Flies some years ago - they said they had to go home and eat dinner afterwards.

Thanks for the good websites and suggestions for eating. I really liked the one about letting your nose be your guide. How true that is for seafood. Another question: Do you have any favorite chocolate shops or chocolate treats in Amsterdam?
