<< i am surprised by the no of cases that have no identifying characteristics or owners' details. >>

annhig - the last time I flew I had a new piece of luggage and had forgotten to get a luggage tag so I asked for one of those paper luggage tags at the check in counter. The airline employee told me that they're no longer available because all my information is on the luggage paper that they affix to my bag (with the destination airport code, etc). He showed me and sure enough everything the airline needed to know was on their paper tag. I never look at those things, just tear them off when I get to my destination so I don't know when they started doing this.

adrienne - They started putting those on quite a few years ago, i think. they normally have a bar code and lots of very small print. i like to have the info in nice large letters in the hope that if it does end up heading to the wrong place, someone might spot the anomaly. of course, it probably makes no difference at all, but it makes me feel happier! and if the case did lose the official tag, it's still got my luggage label and our unique luggage strap.

belt and braces.

schnookies,

Lots of good advice. As someone said, check the airport code on the luggage. I have caught a mistake twice. They put my final destination airport code but I wasn't flying there immediately. I was going to spend several days in my first destination.

One other time, when we were flying to Japan, the airport was very busy, and we had to stand in a line that was not immediately next to the belt where they put the checked bags. After weighing each bag the woman who was checking the luggage told the guy to put them on the belt. We were the last ones in the line and when she weighed our last bag she just left it on the scale, collected her papers and left. I had a gut feeling that my bag was not going to make it, so I checked back after some time and the bag was still standing on the scale. I had to ask the guy who was putting the bags on the belt to come get it and put it on the belt. He was so busy, he would never have noticed it because he assumed the line was closed already.

Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Carry on and relax. We've done that for years after multiple delayed luggage experiences.

This six-year-old thread was resurrected today by annhig. I'm pretty confident the trip schnookies was so worried about in 2006 is long over and done and consigned to a distant past...

Some might argue that the information given originally is still valid so why not keep it going? Not true, at least not for BA hand baggage allowances.

not guilty, m'lud. it was topped by an advertiser that i was too stupid to spot. [or is that a plea in mitigation?]

I guess the advertiser's post got yanked. I didn't see it. Still is a good thread.

We've never lost our bags, always check them. (Fingers crossed)

I like the idea of putting a copy of the itinerary inside the bag.

The best additional advice given here was to ALWAYS put your name address and telephone number, ( and itinerary if you wish) INSIDE the bag very visible.

The ONLY reason we ever retrieved a lost bag on eyer after many weeks was searching for some information, they found two unused salmon fishing permits from a Canadian trip in the inside pocket. Fortunately I had put my parents' USA address as our own .. and this bag was returned because of that piece of paper!

It's so sad to see those warehouses full of "lost" items.. surf boards, bikes, etc... It's almost unbelievable how much stuff gets lost.

As far as rail travel goes....

Not sure there's an English version of this, but Trenitalia do in fact provide recompense for those whose luggage is stolen from the storage areas on most types of train:

(New rates as from last August, so should still be in force!)
