Im going to Italy!

I will be traveling to Italy and hopefully a few other places, July 1st - Sept 19th. I am just graduating culinary school and want to experience Italy. So needless to say food is an interest.

I am on a tight budget and its a long trip. Was thinking of trying to stay in hostels, or possible work for board, for a month or so. i am planning to see France (late July) and maybe couple other countries, but mostly want to explore Italy. I know it's high tourist season so i would like to get off the beaten path a little. I am flying in and out of Milan. Lake Como has been a place i have always wanted to go. Any suggestions on how to save money, or friendly foodie places not so crowded?

You can't work in Italy unless you are an EU citizen. Maybe you could make an arrangement to barter services for food and board or something like that, but if money changes hands and you're not an EU citizen, you have a problem.

I would go to the ThornTree website, as there are more people there doing these sorts of trips than here on Fodors.

Good luck!

Have you already purchased tickets? If not, look into multi-city, going into the first place you wish to visit and departing from the last so you do not have to spend money backtracking to Milan.
