Exiling to Italy - Nontravel but I'm curious

This will probably be removed, but I thought this would be a good place to ask. I was just reading that some Palestinians might been exiled to Italy. It seems I hear a lot about people being exiled to Italy and I was just wondering - why Italy? Is it for politcal reasons or a matter of geography? Just curious. Let's chalk it up to learning a little more about a place that I love to visit.

I'm curious, too. Will they be imprisoned or free to live where they choose?

My husband and I had this discussion last night when we heard it on the news, and we were wondering about the same thing? Does is mean that they will be free in italy, or will they be locked up?

It's my favorite country also, so I am concerned about what could happen.

Actually my question, wasn't really about that particular story. It was about why Italy seems to get a lot of exiles. The latest story was just an example.

The exiled former King of Afghanistan had been living in Italy too the past 20 years, until his recent return, I believe.
