Call and ask. Or call and make a reservation at the lower rate, then cancel the first.

language barrier is a problem....but is it reasonable to cancel a reservation and book one in the same name right away? is it frowned upon and will i get a lower quality room?

I booked at a hotel in Paris and later my friend booked there. She got a better price than me, so I wrote to the hotel stating I had stayed there several times, recommended their place to some friends, and would it be possible to get the lower rate? They were very nice and I got the lower rate. I don't think it hurts to ask. Be polite in your correspondence.

Hi

It's just supply & demand ?

I've had better rates from negotiating at reception, than supposedly low cost agents had quoted.

I have a good corporate rate at a Marriot hotel.

One night at reception I heard a walkin get a slightly better rate, but it was 10.00pm and they may not have found a room ?

Equally, I doubt you'll get great discounts for, say, Monte Carlo during the GP.

Peter
http://tlp.netfirms.com
If the rates went up would you pay more?

It never hurts to ask. The worst that could happen is someone says "no." And, as Monica pointed out, if you are polite you are far more likely to get the lower rate!

If the hotel you chose has lowered its rates, perhaps comparable hotels have reduced rates for the same period.

It might help to see what lower priced reservations you could get from a competitior hotel. Have that in your pocket if you don't get the response you want.

Might also be a good idea to write to your first choice hotel to ask if there is some reason, like major remodeling or other inconvenience to guests, that prompts them to be offering lower rates to others, for the period you've booked.
