Iceland car rental: GOOD experience?

Reading all the negative threads about car rental in Iceland makes one wonder if there are ANY reputable companies that won't overcharge you or provide bad customer service. So I thought I'd approach the frequently asked question a different way:

If you had a GOOD experience with a car rental company in Iceland, please reply with the name of the company. If you had a bad experience (even if it's with a company that someone replies here with a good experience), please post in one of those other threads instead.

**Related question: Seems many (all?) companies charge for an additional driver. In many U.S. states, a spouse is automatically covered (not charged extra as an "additional driver"). Can anyone confirm whether or not this is the case in Iceland? I'd like to add the wife, but don't want to pay extra if not necessary.

According to the blog, the best car rental companies in Iceland are: CARS ICELAND, REYKJAVÍK CARS and REYKJAVÍK AUTO.

AutoEurope, the discount broker, doesn't offer any services in Iceland, but its sister company Kemwel does (, and since you will be renting a car outside of the States, you can expect to pay extra for a second driver. It's standard practice. If you have any questions, you can always call Kewmel.

Anywhere in Europe you will pay extra for a 2nd driver. It's standard.

There are many car companies that seem to have decent reputations, but there's no such thing as a car company (or any company) that will never have a complaint.

We used Blue Car. Not the cheapest, but I liked the included insurance and they're pretty reputable. They were about 10 min late delivering our car, but they barely checked anything when they came to pick up the car. (We had them drop off at a hotel and pick up in front of a hotel too.) Obviously that had quite a lot to do with the zealousness or lack thereof of the service agent assigned to deal with the car!

Our car had a very low mileage and looked almost new. We had no problems with it and were quite happy with our experience.

I had no problem with Sixt at all - booked online, picked up at the KEF airport.

I used Reykovic cars who were actually Go Iceland. We paid for the all inclusive insurance. The guys in the office both dropping off and picking up were very unfriendly, but I chatted them up a bit and then they were quite helpful. The car was older, I took pictures of everything before I left and when we returned it I showed him a chip in the windshield. I didn't think that the Windshield was covered, but he said 'good thing you have the total insurance package' and I was on my way. Overall we were please with them.

I haven't been on this site for some time, so I wanted to tie off this thread I created by commenting about our car rental experience in Iceland (KEF). We ended up booking with Sixt, and had an excellent experience. No hint of the horror stories that are common in this forum.

The car we got was brand-new; we were the very first ones to use it. I believe the mileage on the odometer was something like 12 when we took possession. This made me nervous, because if there were the slightest scratch upon return, it would be incontrovertible that it happened during our rental. But everything went smoothly, and we had no issues whatsoever.

I still took plenty of photos of the car before and after the rental, and I think that's one of the best pieces of advice you can follow. YMMV, but hopefully this feedback helps!
