In my personal opinion, you get the best pizza in Naples, at Ettore, in Via Santa Lucia. Until now I did not found pizza better than this pizza. My suggestion is for "favolosa".
In Penisola Sorrentina, where I live, I'd suggest, as Paradise changed his human resources and his pizza maker, to go to Tramonto Rosso, a very mice pizzeria in Massa Lubrense, at the cross ponit among the hamlets Monticchio, Schiazzano and Marciano.
At the actual moment, I presume it's the best pizza in my beloved Penisola Sorrentina.
Ettore is closed on Sunday, Tramonto Rosso on Tuesday.
Have a nice trip.

my guidebook says there is only good pizza in Naples. I tested this theory extensively and found it to be quite accurate.
I found it very convenient to buy pizza by the slice from one store front and move on to the next store front to compare. I was never disappointed.

If you want to taste the ORIGINAL italian pizza in Naples, I suggest BRANDI, Salita S. Anna di Palazzo 1-2, phone 081-416928. THis is the place where the original pizza margherita was born, one of the oldest pizzerias in Naples. Reservation is better, because there is always a lot of people going there. It is a typical place with guuitar players playing typical napolitan songs. Everybody sings and applauds. The pizza is terrfic!

Thanks everyone.
I will write these down, and is it best to order Pizza Margherita? And I think I have read you don't drink wine with pizza, you drink beer, true?
One more thing, I have read, I think, that in Naples area they don't put meat on pizzas, true?

While I have been to this pizzeria, I never had their pizza but rather their fried vegatables, but very many Neapolitans recommend "Da Matteo" as the best pizza in the city itself. One Saturday night there was a line of at least 40 people waiting for their names to be called to either (a) get a seat inside or (b) get their pizza to take home. This is the pizzeria at which Bill Clinton ate when he was in Naples. You can ask for the exact location when you get there.
If you are coming to Praiano on May 20, you'd see the Potatoes Sagra: do not miss it.
Anyhow, a good restaurant which has a good pizza is LA BUGIA, on the road toward Positano. Typical is pizza with nuts.
In the hamlet of Praiano named Marina di Praia, there is the restaurant LA PRAIA: based on fresh fish.
Other very good restaurant is LA STRADA.
Have a nice trip.

Oh, SeaUrchin, I know you didn't ask about other kinds of restaurants, but if you have a chance, DO go for dinner at Ristorante Bellini, at the Piazza Bellini.

We had one of the best meals ever there. Absolutely fabulous seafood, reasonably priced.

There's also a good pizzeria on the Piazza Bellini- can't remember the name, but very good. We got a Quattro Stagione-divided into four quadrants, each with something different. One with clams and mussels in the shell on top.

Personally, I think the best pizza I've ever eaten was at Lombardi's in Little Italy on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. We tried pizza all over Italy, and it just wasn't the same. Good, fine, a decent meal, sure. But not to my taste.

I had pizza at three different places when I stayed overnight in Naples in 2001. It was enough to learn that Neapolitan pizzas range from so-so (by the slice at a storefront), to pretty good (restaurant in the old city), to brilliant (Trianon). We were planning to go to da Michele (spellings approximate), which a NYT article the week before our departure claimed had supplanted Brandi as the best pizza place in Naples. We got there and the line was out the door and beyond, so we went to Trianon, the other pizza place on the street. We've been searching for something comparable in the states since then, so far without luck.

Hi SU,

In Praiano, La Strada and La Brace have excellent pizza along with other good things.

>There's also a good pizzeria on the Piazza Bellini-...<

Oddly enough, it is called Pizza Bellini, end of Piazza Bellini just opposite Via Port’Alba.

Very good local restaurant. In addition to 39 kinds of pizza, fish, shellfish, pasta, good local wines. Moderate to expensive.

Another vote for Brandi in Naples...can't vouch for any other place given we only tried Brandi. However, both my husband and I come from Staten Island, l'isola suprema per la pizza, so we know best! (Or at least think we do...)

I was so confused because I know that SeaUrchin has been to Italy several times. Well everyone, SeaUrchin's question was posted 4/21/2003 - two years ago!!!!

However, all the recent post will be a big help to travellers going to Italy this year.

Jules,

If you liked Lombardi's, then you must go to Grimaldi's in Brooklyn. That's the best pizza that I have ever had in the NY. Then go to the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory for amazing ice cream.

Pretty funny, I clicked on this thread to see some pizza opinions and it was my own question.

I have experienced so much in the Naples/AC area since then (!). I have now chosen Michele as my favorite pizza place. We go there every time I am in the area and I wish I were sitting there right now!

I am proud and happy that someone thinks of me after two years.
I left from my beloved Penisola Sorrentina and now I live in Romagna for the past two years and, believe me, also Romagna is a so delightful land. The small town where I live is Santarcangelo di Romagna.
I am ready to give suggestions, tips and help to everyone who is going to plan a trip in this region or, as it is so close, also to Marche.
I still enjoy, as I previously did in my beloved Penisola Sorrentina, good restaurant food, excellent wines, gorgeous olive oil and everything else that is focused on my particular meaning of wellness.
BTW, I have not lost touch with my dear friends in Penisola Sorrentina so that, if you trust me, I can still give you smart tips.
Ciao a tutti i miei amici, vecchi e nuovi, di Fodors
