Well, at least I know that I am in good company! I can definitely relate to "Romesickness". (and Florencesickness, too!) I was just there in May, and can't wait to go back.

I'm so glad that I am not the only one. I just returned on Sunday. I almost cried in the grocery store on Monday, when I saw the sad excuse for focaccia and ciabatti they were selling. I was online yesterday trying to buy a wheel of grana padano.

I was in Venice and Rome in mid-march, then back to Italy at the end of April for another three weeks (my 20th Italy trip I think). Lately I've found myself wondering how I could fit in a Thanksgiving trip to Venice . . .

Hi Johanna!

I didn't know you returned this past May, did you stay at the Via Panico apt?

I'll be returning next year with my sweet to Paris AND Rome/Florence.

Ciao Eileen

I also love Italy and try to get there at least once a year, but I also love Spain and France. I really can't decide which of the three I love most.

Just wondering if you love Italy ABOVE all other destinations or is it just one of several loves? Do you find that other destinations, despite how much you nejoy them, don't quite live up to Italy?

Regards Ger

Hi Eileen!

No, I didn't stay at the apartment, I was just there for a day trip. I did pass by and say hello, though. That area is my favorite in Rome. I love Via dei Coronari, don't you? I couldn't get over how much more crowded it was in May than when I was there in November. But it's nice to walk down the side streets and get away from the crowds.

When are you going to Paris? I finally have enough frequent flyer miles with Delta, and am thinking of going back to Paris. The only catch is that I can only find a FF ticket in February. I know it will be cold and rainy, but I'll be in Paris, so who cares? I have started to look at hotels, and have a few in mind.

Glad things are going well with you and your sweetie!

Take care,
Johanna

I was in Italy in April and again in June and I miss it already. I leave September 9 for Germany and the Netherlands. Wish I had just gone back to Italy.

I am a nut about Italy too. I spend HOURS looking on this forum and plotting how to get back to Italy. Our family of 2 parents and 2 teen boys has been lucky enough to vacation in Italy 3 out of the past 4 summers. I am supposed to take my Mom who was born in China for a "roots" tour next year, but I am planning to try and sneak away to Italy too. Everyone keeps telling me that I should broaden my horizons...but I just prefer Italy to everywhere else I've been...I love the people, the food, the history, the scenery...oh, I am missing it so!

I prefer to think of it as an aversion to a non-refined lifestyle, a lifestyle lacking a cafe society and the attendant degree of refinement accompanying same.

I have said several times that Italy is kind of like an infection in the bloodstream: you're not sure if what you're experiencing is real, but you absolutely know you don't want the sensation to end!

11 more days til I depart for Capri and Rome. Here's where I'll be in Capri:

I'm staying at my usual haunt in Rome, the Hotel San Carlo.

Buon Notte, Tutti,

Ger, I think I actually prefer France to Italy, since I can speak French, it's my favourite language and I'm totally in love with the place. I had such a magical time there in June I need a break from it for a little while.

But Italy is also very special to me. I went last October after not having been there for 8 years. It was wonderful and I then went back in March for 1 week in Rome (first time). In less than 5 weeks I'll be going for a 14-day trip to Turin, Bologna and Rome again. Fabulous exhibitions are all over the place (Bologna, Ferrara, Mantova), then there's the food, the architecture, the beautiful language. And Rome. I DO miss it terribly.

Next year I'm contemplating both Lisbon and Stockholm (2 different trips) but I can't fly direct to either, so a short trip to Italy or France on the way back seems like a pretty good idea.
