I Love Maps!

I need a good map of the Salzburg area and Salzkammergut for driving. I get lost very easily! I have been printing page after page off Mapquest but there must be a better way! Can anyone tell me where to find a detailed map of that area before heading over this summer? Thanks!

Call the Austrian Department of Tourism, and you can get a map. Otherwise, you can go to any large bookstore, and usually within very close proximity to the travel section, is where the maps are stored. Most of the Lonely Planet maps are laminated.

The kind of map you want, if you are considering the Salzburg area only, will be a pretty detailed one. The maps from the Austrian tourist agency are of the entire country and do not contain a lot of local detail. There are maps produced by Michelin and others that cover smaller areas, and you can usually buy them at a major bookstore or over the internet at Amazon.com. For more coverage, I strongly recommend the road atlas made by the British automobile association (www.theaa.uk) who will mail it to you if you want to order it. This one is called the "Big Road Atlas of Europe" and contains about 200 pages, with good detail on every country in western Europe all the way east to Moscow, Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania.

Tess,
Michelin offers two excellent detailed maps. Michelin map no. 926 covers western Austria in detail; it's a typical foldout map. The Michelin tourist and motoring atlas for Germany, Benelux, Austria, Switzerland and Czech Republic (ISBN 2-06-100020-7) is a spiral bound book. The Austrian sections are in a scale of 1cm = 4km detailed enough that hiking trails are shown.

Contact their chamber of commerce or equivalent, maybe they can help.

Tess,

One word of advice; Say you decide on Michelin maps as Wes suggests, if you want to print out the detailed directions, do not use Mapquest or Mappy, use the Michelin website.

I say this because if you use details from Mapquest/Mappy and the maps from Michelin, you will get screwed up. Trust me on this one. Mapquest/Mappy will reference places that will not appear on the Michelin maps. You will spend a lot of time "driving around".

Dick
