I just saw aurora borealis :-)

Hi

I was on my way back from a movie tonight when I looked to the north and saw aurora borealis or northern lights. OK, so why am I thrilled? Well, I live in Stavanger in southern Norway and we don't really see this phenomenon that often this far south. But it is beautiful

Regards
Gard

It is really amazing! I have seen it from Canada but last night on the news, our weatherman in Washington, D.C. showed pictures taken nearby. I never imagined that it could be seen this far south!

The northern lights are magical, aren't they, Gard? I saw them once when I lived in Minneapolis; they were so pretty with the colors moving around in the sky.
I've read that this year the lights have been visible at much lower latitudes than usual and have been seen in the US even as far south as Virginia.

On a flight from Boston to Zurich a couple years ago we had the aurora out the left-side windows virtually all the way across the Atlantic. It was like flying alongside a shimmering green curtain - definitely one of the most amazing things I've ever seen through the window of an airliner.

As Emily Dickerson once did.

"Aurora is the effort
Of the Celestial Face
Unconsciousness of Perfectness
To simulate, to Us."

We saw a wonderful aurora show from the UP of Michigan several years ago. Unforgettable!

Is anyone else old enough to remember the Pogo song:

"O roar a roar for Nora,
Nora Alice in the night,
For she has seen Aurora Borealis burning bright!"

(Now that's an example of the useless things I remember, when I have to write down anything important!)

Truly a gift from nature. (I also love the Jimmy Buffett short story about sisters Aurora and Boring Alice.)

Since we're on the music kick here:

"A cloud appears above your head.
A beam of light comes shining down on you.
Shining down on you.
The cloud is moving nearer still.
Aurora borealis comes in view.
Aurora comes in view."

Your quiz: What 80s group performed this song and what's the name of the song?

Ew, A Flock of Seagulls sang that!

Yes, here in Michigan we've been treated to quite the light show the past few nights. It's been very clear here, too, which makes for optimal enjoyment of the event!

Bookchick, since you were first to name the group, you have won the opportunity to receive A Flock of Seagulls haircut. Congratulations.

Aurora Borealis is one of my aliases. My other aliases are Polly Glot and Millie Regretti. (I wear brown contact lenses when posing as Millie.)

Uh, thanks, but I'll keep my hair just the way it is, thanks. The little plug of hair that came out during last year's chemotherapy, right at the nape of my neck, finally grew back in!

If you missed them, you can see photos at www.pbase.com -- in the search function, enter aurora. There are several galleries, including my own.

Byrd: I do indeed remember the song from Pogo, and here's the rest:

"A furor for our Nora
And applaud Aurora seen,
For where throughout the summer
Has our Borealis been?"

Hello, Byrd,

Just so you won't be lonesome, the rest of Walt Kelly's poem was:

"A furor for our Nora, and applaud aurora seen,

Where throughout the Summer has our borealis been?"

Good to know that ther is more than one "ancient" enjoying this thread.

All the best,

John

lavendry and Big John,

Weren't all those Pogo songs great? We had a Pogo album (33 rpm, of course) with lots of the songs and even a "libretto."
