Marigross-- my first trip to Paris I stayed at Hotel Cristophe in the St. Germain/Latin Quarter border (5th Arrond). There are a number of hotels in that area that while not terribly expensive, do offer tremendous convenience to sights, resturants, and metro. The hotel staff were really nice and helpful, the rooms were cute and quaint. We paid about $75/double, but we are talking about 10 years ago. I am aware they typically run promotions every fall, so you may want to check them out. The site http://www.france-hotel-guide.com/ usually provides good guidance. Even hotels.com and ratestogo.com may be helpful in getting good hotel deals once you zeroed in the area you want.
