How to use Rail Europe Tix?

We have train tix (and reservations)in first class from Rail Europe from Rome to Venice and from Venice to Florence. Do I need to "check-in" at the train stations? How much time do I need to allow for check-in? We probably have too much luggage (one-24" roller, and a 28") to carry them onboard. How is the baggage service? Will I ever see my bags again? Do I need to allow extra time for checking in luggage?

This may seems like a stupid question, but can someone please help out a couple of novices going to Europe for the first time?

Thanks in advance.

I believe in Italy you must validate your ticket before you get on the train, I'm sure somebody else will know exactly. That's about it. Them you drag your own luggage on the train and throw it in the overhead rack. By this time you will be cursing that 28" bag...

Liz is right. You MUST 'validate' your ticket before boarding. Look for the yellow validation machines on the station concourse.

N.B. An unvalidated ticket is worthless and leaves you liable to a fine.

Steve

Don't panic about the luggage yet. Most first class cars have a fairly large luggage rack at either end of the car. With luck you will be able to put your large case there. I travel with a small cable type combination bicycle lock -- good for anchoring and locking your suitcase into the rack so you can feel more secure that someone won't walk off with it. Some trains have ample room under the seats (or rather between the back to back seats) for larger suitcases as well. In any case, I wouldn't check the luggage -- just take it on with you.
I have never had to validate a pre- reserved seat in Italy -- only individual local ones without times or dates on them. There is no advance "check-in". Your ticket will probably be checked eventually on board the train by a conductor.

Hi Schubert:
I did Rome to Venice and Venice to Milan 1st class last year July with Rail Europe tickets. You have to validate the ticket each time even if you have a seat reservation. The conductor comes around and checks the tickets after you've boarded, I believe a fine is involved if the tickets are not validated. Just to be sure validate the tickets at the yellow machines it takes a few seconds. Try to travel as light as possible, I carried (1) 24" expandable roller for 10 days. I was glad I did, in Rome I had to make a quick run and jump onto the train if I was carrying something large and heavy I would have missed my train.

Have a great trip!
