All set for Provence except itinerary--help please

Hello, I have my accomodations, air, car and train all set. Only a couple of weeks to go!! I have copied numerous restaurant recs from this forum, thanks so much.

I am staying in St. Remy for 4 nights then Isle Sur la Sorgue for 2 nights, then Paris 2 nights. I start on Tuesday in St. Remy, late in the afternoon so will walk around and eat there. Wed. morning market in St. Remy and definitely Isle SLS on Sunday morning for the market. I have looked at maps and read my guidebook and researched here. I still feel overwhelmed trying to figure out an itinerary for day trips.

I am driving alone so don't want to drive a lot each day. I have been to Avignon, Aix and Gordes on previous trip. Do not care for Roman ruins. I want to see the hill towns, markets, and lavander feilds. I return the car to the Avignon TGV stn for return to Paris, I fly into Marseilles. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

My cousin and I were in Provence last month. In two days we visited the following towns from Saint Remy (stayed at Residence Les Sources): Oppède Le Vieux, Lacoste, Ménerbes, and Bonnieux the first day; L'Isle sur la Sorgue, Fontaine de Vaucluse, Gordes (stopped for photo op only), and Roussillon.

We also did day trips to Nimes and Pont du Gard; Arles another day. Visited Les Baux in the morning one day; visited Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Orange another day.

Please make sure you give yourself plenty of time at the Saint Remy market day. We gave ourselves only just over an hour and would have loved 2 more hours there!

If interested, please see my web site for restaurant information: http://www.luvtotravel.homestead.com/home.html

Have a GREAT time!!!

If you want hilltowns check out Lex Baux. It's more impressive than Gordes, although it's more heavily "touristed" than is Gordes.

Thank you so much. Monica, I have already copied your restaurant recs and read your website. I will definitely leave the morning open for the market.

We just returned from a great trip to Provence. We loved St. Remy and the Sunday market at Isle sur la Sorgue. We stayed in Arles--bigger and less touristy than St. Remy and Les Baux (though known for its Roman colusseum). Not more than a 10 minute drive from St. Remy is the small town Maussane les Alpilles (sp?), where we bought fabulous olive oil and tapanade. In that area, we went to dinner at Le Petit France which ended up being one of the most enjoyable meals of our trip.

In the Luberon, we stayed in Bonnieux which we found to be more interesting and less touristy than other hill towns like Gordes or Roussillon. It was about a 20 minute drive from Isle SLS. Also, we didn't stop, but there is a lavander museum in the town next to Isle SLS, Caustellet (sp).

Have Fun!

To add to Captain Kirk, if you do go to Les Baux, get there EARLY, say by 8:30am, 9 at the latest. When we left (around 10:30am) the busses were arriving. We counted 12 of them and fully packed with tourists.

If I can get it done in time, I'll be typing up my journal starting this weekend. check back at my web site before you go.
